Frequently Asked Questions [UPDATED 6/2018!]

frequently asked questions
This RP is set in a Potterverse in which none of the canon characters existed. The Death Eaters, the Order of the Phoenix, they all came about organically in other ways. After all, you're always going to find prejudice. So please do not reference any of the canon characters in the course of your roleplay.
WHAT IS THE SETTING OF FINITE INCANTATEM?
Not much. The two organizations are still relatively new - the Death Eaters having only just formed in the Fall of 2019 following political unrest in the Muggle world which had its' inadvertent effect on the wizarding world, and the Order of the Phoenix several months later in the Spring of 2020 as a response to the late former Death Eaters' leader's attempted infiltration of the Ministry of Magic, via means of the Imperius Curse.
HOW MUCH INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE OR KNOWN ABOUT THE DEATH EATERS AND/OR ORDER OF THE PHOENIX TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC? WHAT IS THE ATMOSPHERE LIKE?
In addition to each only being a few years old, they are both still small, and largely operating underground. To date, the attacks carried out by the Death Eaters have been penned as terrorist attacks to both the Muggle world, as well as to the wizarding world. Remember - that's just what the Death Eaters want - to promote the opinion that Muggles are violent and unstable. It leverages them to more easily push their goal of further driving a wedge between the Muggle world and the wizarding world.
With this growing sentiment, Muggle-Borns and Half-Bloods especially are caught in the crossfire, perhaps being swayed to either side. Do they defend their birthright as a Muggle, growing up in the Muggle world? Do they stand up for those relatives with Muggle heritage? Or do they agree with the notion that Muggles have lost it, and the wizarding world is safer, more stable, perhaps the only world that they want to be a part of? For the ones who have only ever known the wizarding world, there are those who believe that Muggles cannot be trusted and that their world must be eradicated in order for witches and wizards to live peacefully - and then there is that handful of Pure Bloods who sympathize with the Muggle world, and believe that all Muggles can't be bad. Of course, as with any political atmosphere, there are also those that just generally don't care, can't be bothered, and are floating on with their lives, acting as if nothing is happening around them. It depends on your character, really - from their personality to the way that their upbringing or current relationships may come into play with their perception of things.
As there is an ever-increasing amount of anti-Muggle propaganda trickling out of several corners of the wizarding world (including from some countries' Ministry of Magic's, who are entirely beginning to denounce them) - but an equal amount of people standing up to fight it - we're going to begin seeing higher tensions and emotions than ever before. Each group will likely begin to recruit more and more members, growing larger and larger - and eventually, yes, they will likely be found out, either one of them or both. At present time, there may be growing suspicion or speculation that the groups exist - as far as "bad guys" behind the attacks which are increasing in frequency - or "good guys" trying to fight them - but there is no hard evidence that has been made public (namely, because the Death Eaters have a heavy amount of infiltration within several countries' worth of Ministries, as well as the fact that they practically control the Daily Prophet), and there are no names and/or faces to either organization as of yet.
It is currently the year 2022. Time moves in real time here, so one day equals one day, one month equals one month, so on and so forth. We also recognize the current month - so for example, if it is January in real life, it is also January on the site.
WHAT IS THE DATE ON INCANTATEM? HOW FAST DOES TIME PROGRESS?
Short answer: it's up to you! We are pretty fluid here about WHEN things take place. Let's say the current month is June - and you really wanted something to happen IC in April, but never got around to it. It's very easy to just post your post as you normally would, in the location that you normally would have - and then either in the title of the thread or in the description, date it so that people know when it takes place and how to fit it into their character's timeline.
IF I MAKE A POST ON MM/DD, DOES IT TAKE PLACE ON MM/DD IN CHARACTER AS WELL?
Generally, we will leave any thread that occurred during the school year live and active, so that people can continue to post in and finish up their threads. Annually, we perform a cleanup on the forums just prior to the start of the school year (September 1st) and move dead threads to archives, and threads that people still wish to work on to the Past and Future subforum.
If the setting of your thread is outside of the current school year (or the last year in general for adults), then please start your thread in the Past and Future subforum. You may put the date and/or location in the title and/or description (wherever/however it fits) for the convenience of others.
We offer the "core four" on our site: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Ilvermorny. You can find out more information about each one on our School Info thread.
WHAT SCHOOLS CAN I MAKE A STUDENT AT?
Unfortunately, no. We currently do not have a large enough member base, demand, or interest in the only other ones that we WOULD even recognize - Castelobruxo, Koldovstoretz, Mahoutokoro, or Uagadou - to constitute channeling the time, energy, and effort that it takes to include the few canon things that we already know about these schools - and then adapt it to our site, such as creating the lore behind the sorting, the houses, etc. to our site. You may always feel free to create an adult who perhaps attended one of these schools and then moved to one of the areas that we DO focus on. If you explore this route, however, please do not take any creative liberties as far as the schools go - such as assuming names of the houses - in the rare event that we do flesh these schools out sometime in the future.
CAN I CREATE A CHARACTER AT ANOTHER SCHOOL NOT LISTED?
Some sites incorporate or even center around post-Hogwarts (or what would be in our case, any of the other core four) schooling. To put it simply, just like the answer to the above question - we currently do not have a large enough member base, demand, or interest to constitute channeling the time, energy, and effort that it takes to create secondary magical educational institutions, so there is no such original one that is recognized. That being said, if a student does have interest in attending a higher education after graduation, there are a few options:
ARE THERE UNIVERSITIES/COLLEGES TO ATTEND AFTER SCHOOL?
• Muggle University/College: If a student has little interest in pursuing a strictly magical career, each country's Ministry of Magic Department of Magical Education is capable of and responsible for assisting those students interested in attending a Muggle University/College. The department will help students with the application process, and effectively create a Muggle-worthy "transcript" based on the students' performance in their respective wizarding school. This would likely be of interest primarily to Muggle-Borns who have experience with a regular school from their childhood years and knowledge of unis and colleges, but it is not limited to them.
• Specialized/"Trade" Specific: There ARE a few known canon specialized schools in the HP-universe, on which more information can be located in the School Info thread. While we have not entirely fleshed any of them out (and quite frankly, probably will not - again due to lack of demand and the such), we would be happy to rank your character as a "Wizarding Adult" and add the school that you are attending as your title/occupation, for example, "Egyptian Centre for Alchemical Studies Student." We will likely not add subforums for these secondary schools, but you may roleplay in the subforums for the general area where the school exists.
• Internships/Apprenticeships/On-the-Job-Training: In the wizarding world, internships, apprenticeships, and on-the-job-training are the primary forms of preparing employees to implement the job properly. As a general rule of thumb, most post-graduates are interns, apprentices, or trainees of their desired career for two years following graduation. During this time, their experiences may vary - for example, an Auror Trainee may be restricted to working in the office or handling general grunt work, or, they may be taken into the field on day one. It really depends, and this is where plotting and building relationships with other characters is very important! Regardless of their experience, please keep it realistic! It is unreasonable for a student fresh out of school to be a professional in their field right away - there will certainly be mishaps and accidents!
Currently, there are not any character limits here. If it becomes a problem that members are creating characters and not maintaining activity with them, we may later impose limits. But for now, there are none. Neither are there post minimums. We expect each member to write to the best of their ability and give other members something to respond to in their posts, but there is no expected word count.
ARE THERE ANY CHARACTER LIMITS OR POST MINIMUMS HERE?
Ideally, we'd like to see at least an in character (IC) post from every character (not just user) at least monthly. However, we don't exactly snoop and keep tabs on everyone, so if you aren't doing this, you're not going to get written up or anything - it's more of a suggestion. We DO hold periodic Activity Checks, during which you'll be required to post with each character in order to "save" them and prove activity. An important rule to note - inactivity in general, as defined by not logging in, not posting in the CBox, not participating in the Discord server, etc. is a general indication to us that you may be disinterested in the site. Any character account that does not have an absence posted in our Absences Forum and has not been logged into in one months' time is considered to be "inactive," at which point their claims become fair game - so if somebody wants your FC, your occupation, your special ability, etc. and you haven't logged in for a month, they can technically take them.
WHAT IS THE EXPECTED ACTIVITY LEVEL HERE/HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO POST?
Of course, please just post in our Site Maintenance & Moderation Requests thread to let us know the details.
I WANT MY SHOP/CLASSROOM/OTHER PLACE TO BE ITS' OWN SUBFORUM. CAN I DO THAT?
Yes, we encourage students to engage in extracurriculars. If there's something that doesn't exist that you'd like to see, please head to our Student Clubs & Organizations thread to request it!
CAN I START A CLUB AT ONE OF THE SCHOOLS?
No. It is canon that Muggle technology and electronics do not work around Hogwarts due to the magical wards around the school. To stay consistent, it is the Admin team's ruling that we assume this to be true of all of the schools. The energy of magic in the air is too much for the device to handle and renders the object useless. Theoretically, yes a student could physically sneak a cellphone, laptop, etc. to school, but if it were powered on, it would fry instantly, and become unusable, so there is no point in doing it.
CAN MY STUDENT BRING A CELLPHONE (OR OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE) TO SCHOOL?
There are some discrepancies on what constitutes as a "transfer student" from site-to-site. How WE define a transfer student here at Finite Incantatem is a student who starts at one school, and switches schools, either in the middle of or between years. A student born in one country, who then moved to another country prior to their first year of school is NOT a transfer in our eyes.
I'VE SEEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT TRANSFER STUDENTS, WHAT IS THAT?
While it is canonically true that a student's name is put on the list of their future school at birth (typically, the one that is geographically closest to them), we like to believe that circumstances can change - such as a future prospective student moving as a child prior to their schooling, or legacies (a child whose parents attended a different school, opening the possibility that said child may receive a letter to their parents' alma mater on their eleventh birthday) - and as such, a student may attend a different school than originally intended at their birth. For that reason, we do not consider these situations "transfers."
Well, generally, the preferred answer is that you do not. Considering we already have four of the major schools of the wizarding world on our forum to roleplay at, we do not like to entertain the idea of our definition of transfer students. Due to the fact that mobility is so much more easily achieved in the wizarding world, we often are hard pressed to find reasons that a transfer would be necessary. Moving in the middle of or in-between school years is simply not enough. With all of the possible means of transportation, such as Floo Network, portkey, and apparition, we believe that a school would do all that they can to explore these options before entirely uprooting a student, and placing them in an entirely different school, with an entirely different curriculum. Beyond that, students board AT the school for 10 months out of the year, less Winter Break - so there is really no reason for them to NEED to be close to home.
I WANT TO MAKE A TRANSFER STUDENT! HOW DO I DO THAT?
Due to this logic, we will largely deny applications for transfer students. Of course, we do realize that transfer students are not an impossible concept - so if you can approach the Admin team with an interesting, original idea as to why you need your student to be a transfer, we will consider it, but there are zero guarantees that we will accept it. Therefore, it is recommended that you talk to us before creating your application and writing your entire history up based on or around a situation that we may reject altogether.
As you wander around the site, it's true - you may encounter students who are or have transferred. Please understand that when we initially opened, this was not an issue, and therefore did not need its' own section or rule; but over time, this has grown to be a problem, and the Admin team was required to address it. Applications prior to April 1, 2018 are, therefore, grandfathered in.
I WAS READING APPLICATIONS AND SAW THAT @USERNAME IS A TRANSFER FOR X REASON, SO WHY CAN'T I DO IT?!
Well, it's there for a reason, so it's a firm rule, unfortunately. We have had a multitude of issues stemming from the combination of new members + special abilities, so, sadly, we needed to put our foot down and forbid it altogether. This is one of those, "a few bad apples ruined the bunch" scenario, and we've collectively decided as an Admin team that this is the best way to prevent further issues, stop any sort of confusion, and to best address the problem.
HOW STRICT IS THE RULE THAT MY FIRST CHARACTER CAN'T HAVE A SPECIAL ABILITY? WHAT IF I ONLY WANT ONE CHARACTER?
If your intent is to only ever have one character, unfortunately, that does not make you exempt from the rule. The ONLY workaround that we can offer is that if it is a taught or learnable special ability - Alchemist, Animagus, Legilimens, Occlumens, or Spell Inventor - then after one month of membership on the site, if there is a slot available for the ability in question, then you may contact the Admin team and request that your character may begin training for the ability in question. Under NO circumstances may you submit an application for a character with no special ability, and then in one months' time turn around and retcon that the character has had the special ability or began training prior to that month of membership passing. Their training begins at the time that you request it via an Admin - absolutely no earlier than that, whatsoever.
As for genetic abilities - Metamorphmagis, Parselmouths, and Seers - we apologize for any inconvenience, but there is no workaround to this rule. The plausibility of a character not knowing of their special ability early on in life is low. Furthermore, even if it were plausible that they did not realize it until later, this runs the risk of causing a GREAT inconvenience to our site members. We don't want someone to base their character around the idea that they are going to someday realize that they have a genetic ability - and then in the meantime, someone who qualifies for applying with the special ability takes a slot for it. If it just so happens to be the last open slot, this could derail the hopeful special ability holder's entire plot. Alternatively, if there is limited space left for a particular ability and someone who qualifies to take the slot is working on an application for it, and the pre-existing member decides to pull the trigger and conveniently have that be the time that their character come to the realization of their talent, then the other roleplayer will be shut out. So, ultimately, saying no to this one is the fairest decision in our opinion, and we will not falter from that ruling. Additionally, we do not and will not "hold" or "reserve" slots for special abilities.
So long as you have been a member with us for at least one month, and there are slots available for the ability in question, then yes, we will allow that. There are some rules and a process to follow, however!
I WANT MY FIRST CHARACTER TO LEARN A SPECIAL ABILITY, CAN I DO THAT?
The first step is to notify the Admin team of your intentions, as we will confirm the validity of your request (i.e. a student who has never been enrolled in Alchemy should probably not become an Alchemist-in-Training, just as a student who failed their Transfiguration O.W.L. with a T should probably not pursue becoming an Animagus), as well as ask questions regarding the circumstances of the training - both to establish a reasonable timeline with you, but also to ensure that your history is being properly updated with this new information (yay, character development!). If we find out that you have edited your application to include the ability or are roleplaying your character as having already started training for the ability prior to obtaining our consent, then you will not only receive a warning but will be forbidden from pursuing that ability with the character. Likewise, even once consent is obtained, you may not retcon that the character has had the ability or that they began training for it any earlier than the date that the Admin team was notified.
Your character WILL be in in-training status for the ability from the point that you contact us that you wish for them to begin training until their training is fulfilled. Length of training may vary based on circumstances, such as: how much time do they have to dedicate to the skill? How are they learning? Do they have anyone helping them? The answers to these questions should not only be realistic, but they should also be considerate of your fellow roleplayers. Never just assume that a certain individual - both specific and non-specific - will help your character with their ability. We will reach out to the second individual in question and confirm their participation, whether it is someone that is explicitly name-dropped, or if it is vaguer - for example, saying "the Transfiguration Professor" is assisting your student with becoming an Animagus - and the position is actively occupied - then we will confer with that role layer.
This list will be updated as questions are brought to us, but please feel free to contact either Admin Lacey or Admin Cor , or post up your own thread in this forum if you have any questions or suggestions you'd like to see implemented on Incantatem. We hope to create a fun, creative environment and a lot of that springs from you guys, so please don't be shy or afraid to ask!
I DON'T SEE MY QUESTION HERE.
