The current year on Incantatem is 2021, but the story begins a good five-or-so years back in 2016, when tensions spiked all over the globe.
Hatred and fear were the driving forces behind a historical event that took place in the United Kingdom. To much of the world's surprise, in the summer of 2016, Britain voted to leave the European Union - or "Brexit" as it quickly came to be known as. The fallout from the vote occurred rapidly, even though the formal departure would not take place until late 2018 - on a global scale, stock markets crashed overnight, and by the time the sun rose on the next day and cast light on the damage done, Britain was left without a Prime Minister. The party responsible for pushing the agenda to leave the EU quickly thrust up a young and inexperienced leader to take the reins. Naturally, this did not sit will with many citizens, but for the time being, they were outnumbered. They needed to wait for the right moment to strike and take back their country.
In America, the Presidential election loomed. Such as in the past, the race came down to two rather treacherous candidates, and citizens were forced to vote "the lesser of two evils." Come November, voter turnout was at a national all-time low, but that didn't stop the election. A new President was named, and while civil unrest and disaster seemed imminent, it held itself off…for the time being. American citizens recognized a unique problem - other countries were beginning to break down from within, as well. They had to remain the strongest…the proudest…or, at least, they needed to act like they were holding themselves together.
Across western Europe, countries continued to thrive, though leaders within each of the individual borders began to work on courses of action to protect themselves should the results of Britain's and the United States' actions prove detrimental to their own country's physical or financial health. Temporarily, in 2019, stock markets rose, creating a false sense of safety with some people. Spending habits became more lax, and personal debt increased. As all good things must come to an end, however, markets crashed once more on a worldwide scale, leaving middle-class citizens on the streets and even causing some wealthier citizens to scramble.
Eastern Europe, though rich in culture and history, never truly saw prosperity while the rest of the world rode on the temporary financial high. Feeling forgotten and disconnected from world events (which, let's be honest, it may have been better for them that way), citizens - even high ranking officials - began to express a general anti-western culture sentiment.
The Middle East and Asia had their own fair share of problems, as well. Territories were challenged and fought over in hopes that one might gain control of a wealth of natural resources. South America and Africa waged their own civil wars within their borders, fed up with years of inequality that left the majority of citizens impoverished. The Oceania region, Australia, and New Zealand seemed to be the only areas of the world not sending out distress signals, choosing to quietly keep to and focus on strengthening themselves. While no country had cast the first stone yet, it felt like it would only be a matter of time.
You might be wondering, "these were just the Muggle problems, right?" Wrong. Despite countries having their own individual governing bodies for magical citizens - such as the Ministry of Magic or the Magical Congress of the United States - the decisions made by Muggle leadership trickled its' way into the wizarding world. From something as simple as a Muggle Born student no longer performing well in school due to their thoughts being preoccupied over their parents' unemployment or the threat of homelessness - to something as drastic as blood status creeping back into the forefront of peoples' minds in an attempt to eradicate even a trace of Muggle lineage (with their self-destructive nature to blame), what seemed to only be affecting Muggles on the outside was beginning to tear apart an entirely different culture, one that the Muggles were none the wiser to.
In 2019, similar to how fear had created a stranglehold on international relations between countries, it also created the first evident divide in the wizarding world. For decades, the Muggle versus Pure Blood battle had been fought - mostly in peoples' minds. It had finally reached a head, however, and a group of extremists behind the anti-Muggle movement - the Death Eaters - found their footing and began to deploy for their big takeover. Aware that you don't just take entire continents overnight, they started out small - infiltrating the schools, respective magical governments, and even sports and media.
The goal of the Death Eaters is quite simple - to achieve blood purity of all individuals who call themselves magical. Scary enough, executing their goal is proving to be quite simple - as people all over the world are gripped by terror and panic, torn apart by social and racial norms, they're slowly doing the dirty work for them. All the Death Eaters have to do is correctly position themselves…and before they know it, they'll ascend to power. It only takes one impatient person, though…to want it, to need it to happen faster than allowing it to happen naturally…
That person was Klaus Antov, a dark wizard of quite proud Russian lineage. As far as wizarding history books go, his family was one of the oldest, richest, most powerful Pure Blood families - as well as one of the most outwardly elitist. Klaus Antov helped to orchestrate getting the Death Eaters into the striking position that they are currently in now. The blood lust got to him, though - he became unhinged and nearly blew the plan when one of the members of the Minister of Magic's security detail was found to be under the Imperius Curse. With a team of Aurors hot on the trail to finding Antov, he knew that if he were caught, it would unravel the entire operation. He sacrificed himself for the protection of the Death Eaters, but the tip of the iceberg had already been revealed.
The Ministry of Magic chose to keep their lips shut in regards to the situation, not wanting to cause widespread panic among the wizarding community, in hopes that it might be an isolated incident. Loose lips sink ships, after all - but one could easily retort that secrets don't make friends. On the flip side, the Aurors who had worked on the Antov case had enough information on him to conclude that there may be the existence of a faction with strong, deep-rooted anti-Muggle sentiment. They responded by creating their own group - the Order of the Phoenix. What was initially a ragtag, mismatched clan of Magical Law Enforcement employees grows every day through word of mouth, gaining members from all walks of life.
As the Death Eaters grow their own numbers, one thing is for certain: the world around us is growing more hostile by the minute. Whether you're a Muggle, a Muggle Born, a Half Blood, or a Pure Blood, the domino effect can be felt all around. What business the Muggle governments get up to inevitably seeps into the lives of magical folk and their governing bodies. With everyone and everything stretched so thin, it's only a matter of time before something - or someone snaps.

Some key events that have occurred on Finite Incantatem thus far:
[ JUNE 2021 ]
A ruthless attack is unleashed on Paris, France. Though the Death Eaters are responsible, they remain an unknown organization. In the aftermath, the attack is ruled as terrorism, with the perpetrators still at large. The Muggle world and wizarding world alike are on high alert following the attack. Both sides suffer numerous losses.
[ JULY 2021 ]
Pierre Gardinier ascends to become France's Minister of Magic, and begins to subtly push propaganda citing Muggles solely responsible for the terrorist attack in Paris a month prior. This further creates a rift between the Muggle and wizarding world in France. Even within the French Ministry, there is unrest, with a few employees being pulled in for questioning and detainment regarding the attacks.
[ AUGUST 2021 ]
As the Death Eaters unknowingly take control of the country of France, many loyalties are tested within the French Ministry of Magic. Several deaths are reported over the summer, including, but not limited to the majority of the Sauveterre family, and the patriarch of the Liao family. These deaths are ultimately ruled as murders, and as they do not strictly affect one blood type over another, the French Ministry of Magic classifies them as Muggle-on-Wizard tragedies. This furthers the Death Eaters' agenda of driving a rift between Muggles and wizardkind.
[ SEPTEMBER 2021 ]
Despite the violence endured in France over the summer, life must go on. Confined within its' borders, its' reach has yet to affect the majority of the rest of the wizarding world. parents prepare to send their children back to school for the Fall 2021-Spring 2022 term.
This year is a particularly exciting one - the development of the Scholastic Program for Excellence, Long Lasting Cooperation, and Radical Achievement for the Future Tournament (S.P.E.L.L.C.R.A.F.T. for short) provides an excellent distraction, and the school year kicks off at the host school, Hogwarts. Fourth years and older of Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Ilvermorny wishing to travel to the host school to cheer on their champions may attend, along with any staff members wishing to chaperone. The Tournament is open to students 16 years of age or older.
On the first evening of the term, at the Welcome Feast, the champions are selected: for Hogwarts, Asha Patel and Lucas Vanetti; for Beauxbatons, Daisi Prewitt and Chi Liao; for Durmstrang, Morana Vlcek and Isaac Harrow; and for Ilvermorny, Skye Morris and Aiden Thomas.
