fall 2022-spring 2023 student positions application

Calling all students! There are plenty of open positions for the Fall 2022-Spring 2023 school year, including Head Boy, Head Girl, Prefect, Quidditch, and Quidditch Captain positions. If you are interested in applying for any of the vacant positions, please reply to this post. If you would prefer for your application to be private, you may PM BOTH Admin Lacey and Admin Cor in the same message.

The deadline to apply for a position OOC is July 31, 2018. Users will be noticed OOC and students will be notified IC via owl to their home of any position(s) earned for the upcoming school year on Wednesday, August 24, 2022. Please keep this date in mind when threading.

A few things to remember...

• You MAY apply for multiple positions, even within the same school - but please be mindful of our LEADERSHIP LIMITS. If you are unsure where you stand or how many you currently have, please contact Admin Lacey or Admin Cor, and we will be happy to evaluate for you.

• A student may participate in no more than a total of four extra-curriculars - for example, a student may be a Prefect, play Quidditch, and be in two clubs for a total of four.

• Each house has two Prefects ("Representatives" at Ilvermorny) per year, fifth years and up - historically one male, and one female.

• The Student Body President and Student Body Vice President roles may be either or both male or female - they do not follow typical "Head Boy/Head Girl" tradition.

• Any new applications received from June 10, 2018 until August 24, 2018 will not be "automatically" granted a position. Usually, during the school year, if a position is not filled, we allow new applicants to just add into their application their desired role, and they get it (so long as it makes sense - like a good student earning Prefect). Since we are in-between school years, any student wishing for a leadership position will have to apply for it and wait on a decision to be made. Applications received on or after August 25, 2018 requesting specific positions within the app will be accepted, so long as the decisions make sense and the position is open.

• Preference is given to students currently holding positions, with the exception of those who have recently failed classes, exams, or are otherwise on academic probation. For example, a current 5th year Gryffindor Prefect is much more likely to "age up" into the 6th year Gryffindor Prefect position versus an entirely new Prefect being chosen.

• To go along with the point above...positions do NOT necessarily carry over to the next year. For example, if you are a 5th year Sanguine Prefect, it does not mean you are automatically a 6th year Sanguine Prefect. This is to ensure that you are actually still interested in the position. The only exception to this is Quidditch positions - if you are currently a Chaser for your house team, you may continue to be a Chaser, without needing to apply. However, if you wish to change your position on the team - such as going from Chaser to Keeper - or Reserve to Beater - then you will need to complete the form.

• If you are unsure of what positions might be available, check out our CHARACTER DIRECTORY. Please keep in mind that the current school rosters are reflecting Fall 2021-Spring 2022 information, and that all positions being applied for are for the Fall 2022-Spring 2023 semester (so if a spot is currently filled, but is filled by an outgoing graduate - then apply for it!)

• IC, Prefects are chosen by Heads of Houses. Head Boy/Head Girl is often suggested to the Headmaster/Headmistress by Heads of Houses, and ultimately picked by the Headmaster/Headmistress. The exception is Ilvermorny, where things work a bit differently. Student Body Presidents and Student Body Vice Presidents are elected by their peers - the Professors have no say. The Professors at Ilvermorny do, however, select Representatives for their houses.

• On the note of Ilvermorny (see above)...the way Ilvermorny Student Body President and Student Body Vice President will work OOC is that we will accept interested parties as well as nominations for the "ballot." On August 1, 2018 until August 15, 2018, we will open a ballot for Ilvermorny students to vote IC for their candidate of choice.

• Please ensure that your application makes sense and aligns with your character. We have a lot of open positions, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we will accept a slacker as a Prefect, or a fifth year who has never played Quidditch before in their life to be a Quidditch Captain.

• After the positions go into effect IC on August 24, 2022 (aligning with August 24, 2018 real time), users have 10 days to update their character histories with the new information (nothing drastic - just a line or two that they received the owl about it, perhaps about how they suddenly came to obtain it, or perhaps how they retained it). If after 10 days this has not been completed, the position may be stripped and opened up for others to apply for.

• Applying for a position does not mean it is guaranteed to you. This is sort of our way of giving preference to members already on the site wishing for positions, so that new applicants can't just come in the middle of summer break and snatch up a position that an established member/character may have been interested in. Of course, as always, we will do our best to accomodate everyone and be fair.

• If there are any additional notes that you can provide in the "Anything else?" section of your application, please do so! Examples include if you are applying for multiple positions with multiple characters, perhaps let us know your order of preference. Again, we may not be able to grant any or all of your requests, but we will do our best, and knowing which ones mean the most to you will definitely help!

Congratulations, students, on another successful school year! The Fall 2021-Spring 2022 semester is officially coming to an end! How did you do on your O.W.L.S or N.E.W.T.S? Will you be advancing to the next year, getting held back, or graduating out into the big, scary place known as the ADULT world?!

Before posting here, please review the required O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. grades in the Bulletin Boards, and be sure to post your scores if it applies to you!

ILVERMORNY O.W.L. & N.E.W.T. COURSES & GRADES

Please copy, paste, and fill out the below code with the situation that corresponds best to your character. You may post multiple forms from the same account, but please only post for one character per form.

Some things to remember...

• Students may not skip a grade.

• This should go without saying, but only 7th years may graduate. XD

• Students of the age of 17 at Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and/or Durmstrang may drop out of school. Students of the age of 18 at Ilvermorny may drop out as well. Please keep in mind that without a finished magical school education, job options will likely be scarce, and this should only be used as a last resort and/or in very extreme circumstances.

• Students who have failed and are being held back may not qualify for Head Boy/Girl, Prefect, or Quidditch Captain positions; they may, however, remain on their house teams, but may potentially be replaced with a Reserve for the first game of the Fall 2022 season (academic probation).

• Please don't try to pull a fast one and change schools - short of some significant IC circumstance approved by either Admin Lacey or Admin Cor that can be explained in their history, transfers will not be accepted.

• A separate thread will be posted for students wishing to obtain Head Boy/Girl, Prefect, Quidditch Captain, Quidditch, and other positions. Any notes regarding such in this thread will be ignored.

• For graduating students, please be realistic and keep in mind that your character will likely be training for their desired job for the next 1-2+ years. For example, an outgoing Hogwarts graduate would not suddenly be able to become a member of the Wizengamot with no other experience beyond school.

• Additionally for graduating students, please keep your O.W.L. and/or N.E.W.T. scores in mind! We WILL be checking them (as well as their posts to see if their grades are even plausible) and verifying whether or not your students' career choice is realistic. For example, if you blatantly post that your student failed Potions with a T and is trying to work at St. Mungo's as a Healer...well, it isn't going to work out. St. Mungo's would not employ someone with little to no skill in a subject that the job so heavily relies on. An illicit potioneer, however, may employ your student - so don't worry, there ARE options since we have tons of possibilities as far as ranks go here on Finite Incantatem.

• Changes for graduating students are effective IC Friday, June 17, 2022. Changes for remaining students are effective IC when the new school year begins on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Of course, for Admin sanity, account updates will likely take place before this time, but a graduating student can go into their desired field right after graduation. An advancing 6th year, for example, however, would not truly be a 7th year until the new school year begins. Please take this into consideration when threading.

• This probably won't happen much, if at all, but in the rare event that your students' first career choice is not viable, we will reply here with an @tag to your character's account, letting you know why, so that you may choose a second option.

• Please reply to this thread no later than July 31, 2018.

• Once you have completed your form, your name will be moved from the generic list to the appropriate header. This is to also help us keep track for when we go through to edit/update accounts.

GENERAL GAME PLAY

Here at Incantatem, we don't want to ignore all that beautiful background you've created for your characters. Quidditch isn't just about luck, it's about skill, and your characters should be able to use the experience they have. Therefore, the way Quidditch works on Incantatem will incorporate both.

There are three terms everyone needs to know before going on. These are:

• Skill Stat: This reflects your character's skill. There are five skills, or attributes, that each character will have in every game and every play. These will be contained in a template that every player will be given to post with. Please see more detail about each stat below.

• Action Roll: This reflects the luck or chance component. This number is gotten by rolling a die with the code
CODE
[roll]1d20+MODIFIER[/roll]
at the end of your post in the game.

• Play Score: This is the sum of the skill stat and action roll. It reflects the total score of the play you are performing. Anyone seeking to oppose your play must use their stats and action rolls strategically to create a higher action roll.

Gameplay will follow this format:

• The game starts immediately after the thread is posted. The first chaser to post takes possession for their team.
• The game is pretty much a free for all in that anyone can post at any time except during time outs.
• Players should remember that there is ONE Quaffle, TWO bludgers, and ONE snitch, and so plays involving these balls should be resolved before starting a new play. (i.e., if a Chaser is trying to score, another Chaser shouldn't try to steal, or take possession of the ball before the Keeper resolves their reaction to the score attempt.
• Please tag the intended target of a play with the @[tag] feature. Repeat failure to do so may result in penalties for your team.
• When tagged, you have five posts to respond. After that, the play is considered completed in favor of the person who tagged you.
• Players should also respond to actions in the order they happened. If you ignore the first to address the second, the first will be considered to have been successful. (i.e., if a bludger is shot at a Keeper, and then a goal is attempted, if the Keeper ignores the bludger to try and save the goal, they will be hit by the bludger.)
• You may, however, address the second action after the first so long as the five post time limit has not passed.
• Please do not edit your post for any reason. If you forgot to tag or roll, please QUOTE your post and add those things.
• However, if someone posted before you and made the contents of your post void, you may edit it to notify Admin Lacey or Admin Cor to delete your post.
• Do not post back to back. You must allow another player to post between your posts.
• Every player playing in the game must post once per game in order to keep their spot on the team, unless a valid absence has been posted by that member.
• You may request subbing in a reserve if you are not going to be able to play. If you sub yourself out, you do not lose your position on the team.
• Captains may sub in a reserve for any player who has not shown up within three days of the game being posted.
• Each team can call one time out per game for any reason. Game play must immediately stop until the Admin Lacey or Admin Cor calls the game back into play.
• Players may also request time outs from Admin Lacey or Admin Cor if the game becomes muddled, game play rules are broken, or other reasons. These time outs are not official team time outs and will be granted at the discretion of the admins.

STATISTICS

Quidditch is part luck and part skill. This is where your character's skill comes into play.

Each player will have FIVE attributes, similar to most roleplaying games. These attributes are Accuracy, Agility, Endurance, Speed, and Strength. To start out, each player will be given a template with their Quidditch stats. Each player will get the same base stats, and then ONE additional stat per year of experience on a team to place wherever they like. You can earn additional points as well as change your stat spread by posting in practices. Players should strategically place their points based on their chosen style of play.

• Accuracy: A measure of how well a character can control the various balls. It increases their chances of scoring, passing, getting hits, etc.
Dexterity: A measure of how agile a character is. This increases their chance of stealing, intercepting, etc.
Endurance: A measure of how sturdy and resilient a character is. This enables them to better endure hits, steals, and other sabotages.
Speed: A measure of how fast a character is. This enables them to better dodge, etc.
Strength: A measure of how physically strong a character is. This increases the velocity of any projectile hit or thrown by the character and makes them harder to catch, intercept, or dodge.

Any time a player makes an action, their stat for that action (detailed below) is added to their dice roll in order to make their total stat for that play. Players looking to counter that play will have to use their own stats and rolls strategically.

CHASERS

Chasers are both offensive and defensive players. There are three on a team, and they play with the QUAFFLE. They take advantage of all five attributes, in the following ways:

• Accuracy: This is your scoring stat. The number from this attribute will contribute to your play score when trying to score on a Keeper.
Dexterity: This is your stealing stat. Any time you try to steal, this is the stat you will use.
Endurance: This stat is your endurance stat. During bludger hits, this will determine the severity of the hit.
Speed: This stat has multiple uses. Not only is it your intercepting stat, it's also your dodge stat against bludgers.
Strength: This stat has multiple uses. When passing, this is the stat that someone will have to compete with in order to intercept. It is also the stat someone will have to compete with when trying to steal from you.

CHASER RULES:
Chasers have the most abilities and actions available. They may pass, intercept passes, steal, and score. You can only do one of these things per play (post).

• If your play score is larger than your opponents, your play is successful.
• If your play score is tied with your opponents, the Quaffle is dropped and neither team has posession.
• If your play score is smaller than your opponents, your play is not successful and the other team takes possession.
• If the Quaffle is dropped, the first team to post gains possession.
• After a successful score, the team that did not score takes possession.
• Once a Chaser tries to score, only the Keeper may try to block the goal. Other Chasers may not try to intercept the Quaffle.
• You do not need to roll to catch a pass thrown at you by your teammate, it is automatically caught by you. You do need to roll, however, to intercept from the other team.

BEATERS

Beaters can be both offensive and defensive players as well. There are two on a team, and they play with TWO BLUDGERS. They can take advantage of all five attributes in the following ways:

• Accuracy: This determines whether or not you hit another player with your bludger.
Dexterity: This determines your ability to divert a bludger hit by another beater at yourself or one of your teammates.
Endurance: This determines your ability to take a hit from a bludger.
Speed: This determines your ability to dodge bludgers hit at you.
Strength: This determines how hard you hit another player with your bludger.

BEATER RULES:
When hitting a bludger at another player, your ACCURACY stat will be combined with your action roll. They will have a chance to respond, and if they choose to dodge, their SPEED stat plus action roll will go up against your play score. If your hit is successful your STRENGTH stat plus action roll will be what will be counted against their ENDURANCE stat plus action roll to determine damage. You do not need to post again to determine damage, as the two original rolls will be what is added to the new modifiers.

• A tie will go to the defender.
• A difference in play scores of 1 = player is grazed by bludger but may continue their play.
• A difference in play scores of 2-5 = player takes a hit and their action is interrupted.
• A difference in play scores of 6-10 = player takes a harder hit and is dazed. It will take them five posts to find their bearings.
• A difference in play scores of 11-15 = player takes a really hard hit and has to land to get patched up. It will take them ten posts.
• A difference in play scores of 20+ = player gets knocked off their broom and is out. A reserve may take their place if available, if not then the player is out for twenty-five posts.

Beaters may also choose to defend their teammates. When trying to deflect a bludger from someone, your DEXTERITY stat will be added to your action roll to make your play score. Your play score goes up against the other beater's ACCURACY stat plus action roll.

• If your play score is higher, you successfully deflected the bludger.
• If your play score is tied, you take the hit for the player you are defending.
• If your play score is lower, the player you are defending gets hit.

KEEPERS

Keepers are defensive players. There is one on a team, and they play with the QUAFFLE. They take advantage attributes in the following ways:

• Accuracy: This stat determines whether or not you catch a goal.
Dexterity: This stat determines whether or not you block a goal.
Endurance: This stat determines how well you take a bludger hit.
Speed: This stat determines how well you dodge a bludger hit.
Strength: This stat is your passing. When passing, this is the stat that someone will have to compete with in order to intercept.

KEEPER RULES:
When a Chaser attempts to score, a Keeper has a choice of how they want to defend the goal. They can either choose to BLOCK or CATCH. They can attempt to block their goal by using their play score of their action roll combined with their DEXTERITY stat against the chaser's play score using their ACCURACY stat and action roll. They can attempt to catch their goal by using their play score of their action roll combined with their ACCURACY stat against the chaser's play score using their ACCURACY stat and action roll.

• If your score is higher than your opponent's, you successfully block the shot.
• If your score is tied with your opponent's, then your opponent misses the goal. Any Chaser may pick up the Quaffle.
• If your score is lower than your opponent's, then your opponent successfully scores.
• If a goal is blocked, any chaser may pick up possession of the Quaffle.
• If a goal is caught, the Keeper can pass it to any Chaser on their team. Another team may attempt to intercept the pass.
• A Keeper may only be hit by a bludger TWICE during the game.
• Once a Chaser tries to score, only the Keeper may try to block the goal. Other Chasers may not try to intercept the Quaffle.

SEEKERS

Seekers are unusual players. There is one on a team, and they play with the SNITCH. They take advantage of attributes in the following ways:

• Accuracy: This determines whether or not your character will find the Snitch.
Dexterity: This determines your abiltity to catch the snitch once you've caught up to it.
Endurance: This stat determines how well you take a hit from a bludger, as well as how you defend against interference from other seekers.
Speed: This stat determines whether or not you will be able to catch up to the snitch.
Strength: This determines your ability to interfere with the opposing seeker.

SEEKER RULES:

• Seekers play against the snitch. It will have it's own stats that will be hard to beat, and might even change in the middle of the game. The goal of the seekers is to be the first seeker to beat the snitch.
• The snitch is considering hiding until Admin Lacey or Admin Cor posts that it's on the field that that the Seekers should begin looking for it. From that time that post occurs, a seeker's mission will be to post as many times as possible until it disappears, which Admin Lacey or Admin Cor will announce, or someone catches the snitch. Please keep in mind that you may not post back to back.
• When the Snitch appears, you must first find it. You do this by comparing your play score comprised of ACCURACY stat and action role to the Snitch's STEALTH stat. You cannot go after the Snitch unless you have seen it.
• If your opponent sees it before you do, however, you may notice them going after the Snitch and go after it yourself.
• Once you have seen the Snitch, you need to catch up to it. You do this by using a play score comprised of your action roll and your SPEED stat against it's SPEED stat.
• Keep posting the whole time that the Snitch is in play until you've caught up to it. Catching up to the Snitch is called a speed check.
• You must speed check the Snitch three times before you can catch it.
• After you've got all three speed checks, you must catch it. This will not be the same play you caught up to it in, but must be a new play. In order to catch the Snitch, your play score comprised of your action roll and DEXTERITY stat against it's DEXTERITY stat. You only have to catch the Snitch once.
• If the Snitch vanishes before you catch it, you must start all over the next time it appears.

Beaters may attempt to prevent you from catching the Snitch. If they interrupt your action, you will lose a speed check. The other Seeker may choose to block you during the race for the Snitch, or vice versa. During this, the blocking Seeker's play score will include their Strength stat and the defending Seeker's play score will include their Endurance stat.

• If a seeker is successfully blocked, they will lose one of their speed checks.
• If there is a tie, both seekers will lose a speed check.
• If a seeker successfully defends against a block, the attacking seeker will lose one of their speed checks.

In the case of a SUDDEN DEATH, Seekers will be the only ones allowed to post. Beaters will not be allowed to interfere with Seekers. The Snitch will appear and will stay in play until someone catches it. All the same rules apply.

SCORING

While actually scoring might be challenging, keeping score is not. There are basically three ways to earn points:

• Each goal made by a chaser is worth 10 points.
• Catching the Snitch is worth 150 points.
• The last way to earn points is to be awarded penalty shots. These points will be worth 10 points.

FOULING

There are seven hundred Quidditch fouls listed in the Department of Magical Games and Sports records, though the entire list has never been made public (it was the department's view that some wizards and witches "might get ideas"). 90% of these are banned anyway, by the rule concerning wand use against the opposing team (or rather, lack thereof) and the remaining 10% would not occur even to the dirtiest player. There are, however, 11 common fouls, named below (names of those to whom the fouls apply in brackets):

• Blagging: Seizing the opponent's broom tail to slow or hinder. (All players)
Blocking: Deliberately putting oneself in the way of the opposing team's Seeker, with the intention of obstructing their way towards the Snitch.
Cobbing: Excessive use of elbows towards opponents. (All players)
Flacking: Pushing any portion of anatomy through the goal hoop in an attempt to push the Quaffle out. (Keepers only)
Snitchnip: Any player other than Seeker touching or catching the Golden Snitch. (All players but Seeker)
Blatching: Flying with the intent to collide. (All players)
Blurting: Locking broom handles with the intent to steer an opponent off course. (All players)
Bumphing: Hitting Bludgers towards spectators. (Beaters only)
Haversacking: Hand still on the Quaffle as it goes through the goal hoop. (Chasers only)
Quaffle-pocking: Tampering with the Quaffle. (Chasers only)
Stooging: More than one Chaser entering the scoring area. (Chasers only)

Committing fouls is allowed OOCly on Incantatem, however it is not allowed ICly. So basically, you can play as dirty as you want. However, there will be a referee in every game as well. If they see you committing a foul, they may react however they want. They can ignore it, they can call a foul, and they can award penalties or kick players out of games at their discretion. There are rules concerning refereeing as well, but the general rule about fouling on Incantatem is: IC actions have IC consequences. If you get caught fouling by the referee three times, you are removed from the game.

REFEREEING

Each Quidditch game with be refereed both OOCly, by Admin Lacey or Admin Cor, and ICly, by the school's referee, or other professor if a referee is unavailable. The rules for the IC referee are as follows:

• You should try to post at least once a page.
• You should play your character true to their character.
• When fouls are committed, you can choose to either see them or ignore them.
• You should not see EVERYTHING that happens, but neither should you ignore everything.
• You may award penalties as you see fit. You can either give possession of the Quaffle to the team that the foul was committed on, or you can allow them to take a penalty shot, or you can make the offending player sit out for five posts. After a player has been caught fouling three times, you need to eject them from the game.

WINNING THE GAME

Each Quidditch match ends when one of following happens:

• A seeker catches the snitch.
• Both Captains agree to end the game with the score as is, or in a tie.
• Five days pass without a post being made in the game.
• The game reaches 25 pages.

If either of the last two options happens, the game will go into Sudden Death. What will happen then is that the Snitch will appear, and the only players that post after that will be the Seekers. They keep posting until one of the Seekers catch the snitch. If no seeker posts within 24 hours, the game is called with the score as is.

The winning team is the team with the most points at the end of the game.
