Carter Whitestone

The middle-aged senior auror shuffled his way into the department of magical law enforcement. The man barely acknowledged any of the greetings thrown his way, not even a brisk hello. Nothing. Just keeping to himself and making his way towards his desk. The business of the department seems to be ramped up today, people rushing around and loud voices echoing off to one another. Perfect, just what he wanted today. Loud noise and possibly a new assignment, ready to send him off somewhere to apprehend a dark wizard or witch, or some other such situation. Which is fine by him, it’s why he does what he does.

It’s the paperwork and the imminent reprimand that follows that he doesn’t look forward to. In the past eleven years, Carter has been reprimanded for his constant rough handling of convicts and prisoners. Using far greater force than would be needed. But the Scottish man felt he needed to, to prevent further suffering… and to possibly release some of the built up rage he has within him. As he approached his desk, he pulled out his chair and took his seat, looking at the growing stack of paper before him. Shit. He didn’t remember having this much left to do when he left here last night.

Might as well get to it though, picking up a fountain pen and opening up the first folder before him. But just before the pen could touch the paper, his eyes fell onto the words before him. It seemed to be a report detailing someone he had sent to Azkaban. Though he didn’t read the full report, Carter closed it and placed his pen back onto his desk. Pushing the folder away, he turned slightly and opened the top drawer of his desk, pulling out a small metallic flask with a crow engraved onto it. Leaning back in his chair, he twisted the cap and took a swig of the strong burning alcohol that swished inside the container.

Swallowing the contents, he placed the cap back on and tossed his flask onto the desk. Closing his eyes, he tried to ignore the pain that seemed to be surfacing. He’d rather not deal with it at the moment, wanting to not remember. The alcohol helped suppress the thoughts, numb the pain, and help him momentarily forget. So much has happened in his life that it seems that he’d rather forget so much. But he also worries about the day where he forgets it all, forgets her face and name.

Carter’s eyelids flickered, the light swinging overhead made it hard to drift away. Maybe he should just head on out, find a quiet bar and just drink away the night. If only, right? As he grew comfortable in his seat, the bustling around him seemed to die off. The voices fading out. Letting out a heavy sigh, he felt content. The memories aren’t coming, things are becoming quiet. At least, until a loud voice broke through the deafening. “WHITESTONE, GET IN HERE!”

His eyes shot open, and he slowly took to his feet. Sighing heavily once more, he walked into the office of his superior. His hands placed within his pockets. He looked about, seeing another young man standing in the room as well. Ignoring that however, he turned and faced his superior. “...Yes?” he spoke gruffly, not saying more and keeping a stone faced expression across his face. He isn’t about to show that he’s quite pissed to being called out like this. “Listen, Whitestone, I know you prefer working alone. But you’ll be working with this kid for a bit, so I don’t expect any god damn grumbling and I expect you to agree.”

Gritting his teeth, Carter wasn’t exactly happy about this situation. Turning his head to look at the young man also in the room, he exhaled sharply through his nose. “Very well… sir.” he said, a bit too much bitterness in his voice. “I guess you already got the assignment kid, let’s go.” Carter said, not wasting a minute and exiting the office of his boss. Walking across the room, he moved his way towards the lobby of the department. Not even checking to see if the kid in fact is following him. Why did he get stuck in this sort of situation? The higher ups know that Carter isn’t exactly the best person to work with. What’s their end game here?

Once he got into the lobby, Carter stopped and reached into his inner coat pocket. Pulling out a pack of cigarettes. Taking one of the cigarettes, he placed it between his lips, placing the pack back into his pocket and pulling out a lighter. Producing the flame, he lit the tip of his cigarette, the smoke trailing upwards. Inhaling the cigarette smoke, he felt calmer compared to moments ago. Putting the lighter away, a voice called out after him. “Hey, this is a no smoking area.” to which Carter raised a hand and clenched his fist, followed by extending a single finger. His middle one. Moving that hand hand, he grabbed the cigarette from between his lips and exhaled the smoke. Ahh, felt nice.

The first thing he had noticed upon entering the Ministry that day was how bustling it was, the activity only increasing once Des made his way into the Department of Magical Enforcement. True there were always people running about, but from looking around it seemed to be more busy than usual. More Aurors and hit wizards being sent on assignments of varying nature. Desmond observed them for a moment before taking a seat at his desk, wanting to make an attempt to finish filling some paperwork at the last minute.

It was always his least favorite part of the job. Tedious and taking him away from doing anything else, often keeping him shoved indoors for hours at a time. He’d known that filling out information would be part of the job, but god damn had he underestimated just how often it would happen. Every single time. After every mission, success or failure it didn’t matter he always had to write up a report. He never complained, no verbally at least, the only curses being mentally as he forced himself to finish every report.

Staring at the unfinished report lying on his desk, a sigh emanated from his lips as he picked up a quill to begin. He suddenly wished that he’d had tea, or had brought a bottle of cider with him to drink while concentrating over the papers laid out before him. Eyebrows furrowed as a hand began guiding the quill across the page, thoughts digging up memories of what had happened during his last assignment. It had been dull in all honesty. A mere investigation into a warehouse that had been rumored to be used by dark wizards as a place to store dark artifacts. All of it false leads. The warehouse had instead housed a storage of malt whiskey that was meant to be sent to a tavern. Nothing special and far from exciting, and writing the report had proven to be a rigorous process, one that felt more and more exhausting after writing down each word.

His attention was turned away when a superior called him into their office. Letting out a loud sigh, Desmond stopped everything he was doing to stand up and drag himself to meet with his superior. He wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. An assignment possibly, most likely one that was dull and suited to something a beginner could take care. Working his way, proving his skills was already proving to be the most complicated part of the job. So many saw him as a kid. Still young and holding onto some delusional hero complex.

When he took a seat in the office, he nodded nonchalantly while taking in everything being said. He received information about the mission, eyes widening upon receiving the news that he wouldn’t be working alone. That...that wasn’t what he wanted. Des had always struggled to work with others. A complex from always being overshadowed by his older brother, perhaps, he often hated being forced to work in a team. But if he had to then he had no choice in the matter. At the very least that meant the mission was more complex than a mere check-in, or stalking the area of a hideout before reporting back so the more experienced Aurors could take over if need be.

Desmond nodded as the gruff, older man entered, eyes taking in the man’s appearance carefully. Definitely not someone who he wanted to get on the bad side of. Or annoy. He was sure he’d heard of Carter Whitestone before. Always worked alone. Des suddenly got suspicious if the mission was really for his benefit, or if his assigned partner was being punished somehow. Hard to tell. Whatever. It didn’t really concern him, and he gave a brief shrug once their superior had finished talking.

“Yes, sir,” Desmond nodded in response to Carter’s words working hard to maintain a disciplined and respectful tone to his voice. He followed behind as the older man left the office, remaining silent the whole time. Rather than speaking, he ran through the assignment once more in his mind. Making mental notes of every detail that had to be looked to, already attempting to think of strategies for helping to ensure that it was a success.

The scent of cigarette smoke hit his nostrils upon arriving in the lobby, and he glanced up to see that the older Auror had indeed lit a cigarette. Eyes turned to glance at the poor fool who had called out to try to reprimand the older man for smoking, only to be met by a middle finger in response. Not wanting to interrupt Des instead turned his focus to the doors that would lead outside. He supposed he could go wait outside, let the older man have his moment to smoke without too much more disturbance. “I’ll go wait outside, finish getting ready and think about strategies,” Informing the man what he was doing didn’t seem like a horrible idea, even if there was little chance of getting a proper response. It seemed it would be best to keep a distance, only doing what he was told and not causing too much trouble.

Carter Whitestone

The forty-one year old wizard just wanted to lay in his bed at the moment, a bottle of scotch in his hand and his records playing in the background. The country music echoing in his apartment drown out any thoughts he might have. The bottle in his hand drowning out what cannot be killed by the music. His thoughts usually involved dealing with the same thing… like they do all the time and will most likely continue till the day he either loses his mind or his life. The smile of his daughter, his baby girl Rose. The light in his otherwise dark world, the flame that got snuffed before she even got to experience it.

Yet instead of spending his time in his self-pity, he is at work doing his old passion. Though at the moment it’s just a grind, monotonous and tedious. Like a cog in the machine, turning in unison with the others. Even if he’s more of a lone gear, he’s still part of the machine. If he had to leave his apartment, it would’ve been to head straight to the closest tavern - drink away his sorrows and be done with the day. But no, he must work. Hunting down those who perform such dark actions is his primary concern now.

Carter found the department to be in a hustle, quite energetic and lively. For whatever reasons that he hasn’t been told of, the senior Auror found himself being called into his superior’s office. Being given a job, he nodded and left the room, with a younger Auror in tow. He isn’t a trainee, things better be good and this kid better not get in his way. That is everything that Carter needs to know of him, wants to know even. As he walked through the corridor leading into the main lobby, he took a moment to begin lighting up a smoke.

As he turned and gazed upon the individual who started to lecture him about smoking indoors, Carter just glowered at him and stared him down. Which caused the man to leave in a huff. Turning to look at his new partner for the case, he cocked an eyebrow as he spoke. “Very well, kid.” he said, cigarette hanging between his lips and hands in his dark leather jacket pockets. ‘Seems to be not much of a talker, good.’ He thought to himself. As soon as he started to make his way towards the door, another voice called out to him from behind.

Turning around, he pulled his right hand out of his pocket and grabbed the cigarette removing it from between his lips. Exhaling a large puff of smoke into the air, he watched as the young trainee ran up to him and handed him a piece of paper. The girl told him that it was from the supervisor, then bolted off to get back to work. Sighing heavily, Carter put the cigarette back between his lips and looked over the piece of paper. Turned out to be more information on their query. Well, better get back to work. Folding the piece of paper, the senior Auror made his way out of the building and looked about for the younger Auror.

Soon as he spotted him, he approached, leaving behind a trail of smoke coming from the tip of the cigarette. “Come up with any strategy, kid?” he asked, his hands back in his pockets and letting the cigarette hang between his lips as he speaks. Exhaling the smoke from out the corner of his mouth. “I just got a note from the higher-ups that we’ll be travelling to Bristol and looking for three additional targets. You got the intel on the original one?” he asked giving a slight nod to the young man. Carter wanted to see what this kid could do, despite wanting nothing to do with him. It’s a complicated situation he’s found himself in. He supposed if anything ever happened to him, he’d rather leave the department in the hands of someone capable.

Was there anything he’d rather be doing? In truth, probably not much. If there was it wouldn’t be been a better use of his time. His spare time was often spent being angsty at home, reflecting on how different he was from his family. The outcast, the one who hadn’t followed through with tradition. If he was home he’d do nothing that gave him purpose. If he was at a bar, he’d do nothing but drink and try to escape childhood memories that haunted him. At least with work, he found some meaning, even if a superior felt it was time for him to learn to work in a team. He could convince himself that he wasn’t anything like his family, that he was capable of being good.

He still wasn’t sure how he felt about being tasked to work with another senior officer. Desmond had always assumed that his first team assignment would be with a small team of three to four people. It showed how much experience he still lacked. As he stood in the office, he listened attentively to the assignment as it was given, trying not to dwell too much over the fact that he wouldn’t be working alone. If two people were needed then there was a good reason behind it, with potentially multiple people being involved. He’d only been told of one, but his mind was already speculating whether the suspect had allies or not.

As they entered the lobby, Desmond excused himself just after the older man had received a lecture about not smoking in the vicinity. That alone had provided enough warning for him to keep his mouth shut, something he was able to do easily. The last thing he wanted was to piss off his partner, making the next few hours uncomfortable to work with. Confrontation was something he was well equipped to deal with. It didn’t frighten him, but under the right circumstances, he was capable of saying or doing something stupid. Pissing people off or getting into trouble, both things that he wanted to avoid if he could help it.

As he made his way to the exit, Des began going over the case once again in his head. He tried to think of strategies, ways that might help make the mission go easier. Would it be best to split up and corner the suspect from two directions, further decreasing his means of escape? That would help give the illusion that he was working alone. Yet he wasn’t committed to it. What if there were others like he suspected? Or the target was more dangerous than he’d been informed. Even if the strategies he’d come up were valid he felt he needed to scope the place out first; he needed to get a read on where they would be stationed before dedicating time to any one plan.

The smell of cigarette smoke told him when the older auror had approached him outside. The smell wasn’t Desmond’s favorite in the world, but it didn’t bother him too much. Let people do what they wanted, avoid pissing anyone off when it was most inconvenient. Hearing the man’s question, Des turned to face him contemplating over previous thoughts. “I’ve thought of some, but nothing concrete. I think it might be best to get a feel for the area first, before...before running straight in.” Before running into unexpected trouble, like a trap, he wanted to add but kept quiet on that front. It had felt pointless to mention, more so when Carter went on to provide more information on the case.

Desmond nodded when asked if he received the original intel, making a note that there were three additional targets. His earlier suspicions had been confirmed, which meant to act as if none of the targets were too far apart. If they were working together by any chance, then there was always the risk of an ambush. Bristol itself wasn’t bad in itself, a beautiful coastal town that he had enjoyed visiting in the past. “If there are more targets, then I think we should assume they’re working together unless proven otherwise. Try to minimize the risk of walking into a potential ambush as much as possible.” Even if he didn’t know for certain if the targets worked together or not, Des would rather remain cautious if possible. If there was any risk of running into a trap, then he’d rather avoid it.
