It had been a very long night.

After wrecking the shop to make it look like Cole Bennett had done what he’d come there to do - which, honestly, Lila still wasn’t even processing. That was a problem for tomorrow - they had apparated to her parents’ house. Cole had not been pleased, but Lila wasn’t about to let them believe she’d actually died. She’d given them a highly edited version of what was happening; jjust that she was in some trouble, Cole was helping her out, and that they should go visit Aunt Cathy in Chicago. They’d been concerned, of course, but Lila hadn’t been willing to talk more about it, so that was that.

Cole had gone off to talk to someone he hadn’t wanted her to meet, and had come back announcing that they had a place to crash for a day or two. It was in a rather shitty part of London, where people probably didn’t pry too much into other people’s goings on. Hopefully a different shitty part of London than the one Cole’s… employers? - not a thought to explore now - were in. Lila basically had to trust that Cole knew what he was doing in this regard.

There was something she’d never thought she’d do again. This whole thing was just crazy surreal. Lila wasn’t entirely sure she wasn’t going to wake up, having fallen asleep on her workstation and having had a really vivid dream. But this didn’t feel like a dream.

This felt like waiting for Cole to unlock the door to a run down flat after three am, worn down and too emotionally exhausted to deal with 50% of what was happening at this point. She had over one shoulder a small bag of things she’d left at her parents’ place that she’d been able to stuff together while waiting for Cole to finish making arrangements. A spare sweater. A brush. The cash her dad had insisted she take with her. A few other odds and ends. Not exactly a bag she’d pack knowing she wasn’t going back to her flat any time soon, but she supposed it was better than nothing.

Cole entered the flat first, appeared to scope it out in a glance, and let her in. She followed behind him, letting him manage locking the door back up while she glanced around. It wasn’t much, but Lila hadn’t exactly had high expectations. It was a little studio, with a kitchenette off to one side. The main room itself had a bed against the far wall, and a card table and some folding chairs set up near the kitchenette. There was a door she assumed lead to a bathroom or closet, but it was closed.

Lila set her bag on the counter, leaning against it with a mix of exhaustion and resignation. “Home sweet home, hmm?”

Cole couldn't even begin to wrap his brain around what had transpired this evening.

It should have been a simple job. A meaningless hit - another tally for the list - and more money in his pocket. But instead, it was chaotic, an utter fucking shitshow of a mess. "The best-laid schemes o' Mice an' Men, gang aft agley,” right? Cole could believe no different at this point as he watched his ex-fiance sitting her bag down on the counter of the kitchenette in the cramped quarters that they would be sharing for...the foreseeable future. His expression was an unpleasant one.

How did he get here? How did this happen?

Well, for starters, it seemed as though he was unable to escape the blonde woman before him - in both his dreams and his nightmares. As if their soap opera of a history wasn't enough to let lie and die, fate had decided to play a cruel joke on the two, placing them back together in situation after situation. The most recent, however, was damn near inconceivable, with the woman he'd once dreamed of a life together with at the other end of the barrel that he controlled. She was his hit, and...

...and what? He couldn't do it? Well, as their current situation demonstrated, no - no, he couldn't bring himself to end her life. He wanted so badly to believe that had it been anyone else in the shop tonight, that this hit just wasn't in the cards for him, and that he wouldn't have gone through with it regardless of who the opposite party was. But he'd killed in cold blood before with zero remorse, and knew somewhere in what little was left of his wilted heart that it just wasn't true.

He hated himself for it. He hated her for it.

What he hated worse - and he wasn't sure which of them he hated more for it - was that he couldn't just leave her there. Not only had he abandoned and walked off the job, but he took the job with him. They had painted a not-so-pretty scene in the wand shop, one that would hopefully be convincing enough to allow them to dodge harm...for now, anyway. Cole knew that the man from whom his work trickled down from didn't take kindly to betrayers and absconders, and if anyone caught wind that either a.) Lila was not dead, b.) Cole had run, or c.) All of the above were true, the prognosis was not good.

As far down as Cole had fallen over the last few years and as downtrodden as he had become mentally, at his core, he was still loyal...still a defender...and always a fighter. There was some unspoken part of him that wanted to defy and defeat this, and it was quite possible that even he hadn't realized that yet. Perhaps that was why he'd taken his former love under his wing and whisked her away to safety.

Safety, which was not synonymous with "glamorous" or "comfortable." At a first glance - and considering the part of town it was in - it probably didn't really seem safe at all, in fact, but it was off the grid, obtained from a friend of a friend of a friend (or, you know, generally along those lines), and that was good enough. It had to be, for now, anyway. There was no going back to his flat, and she certainly couldn't go to hers'. Family was out, too. Cole felt it was highly irresponsible and risky to even show up at her parents' place, even briefly, but Lila wasn't about to have it any other way. At the very least, she understood why they couldn't stay there and make a holiday of it.

Sans anything that he could have even remotely cared about - Cole didn't exactly have an emergency getaway bag (which, considering his livelihood, wouldn't have been a bad idea - but hindsight was 20/20) - he spent a few minutes inspecting the flat for things he could make use of, but also giving it a good once-over to ensure there was nothing they weren't expecting...like squatters, booby traps, or the place being bugged.

Considering the small size of the flat, it didn't take Cole long. With not many options for seating beside the bed and folding chairs that probably wouldn't withstand a man of his size, Cole leaned against one of the walls, crossing his arms over his chest. He was weary, tired, uncomfortable. And yet - "You're great at getting into bed with people you shouldn't. Realistically and hypothetically." - the words trickled from his lips just like it were second nature for him to make digs at and pick fights with her.

Which really, it was at this point, was it not?

Regret was a feeling Lila was very familiar with. Basically her whole adult life was one decision after another that she’d come to regret. Apparently even the ones she thought were a good idea at the time - agreeing to marry Cole, coming back to England, refusing illegal wandwork. No matter what she did, it seemed to end with her regretting it. Hell, she probably deserved it after some of the other decisions she’d made.

She was sure by now that repeatedly having Cole show back up in her life was her karmic punishment. Rule one of being a decent person; you don’t fuck around on the person you’re committed to. Lila was probably doomed to have him pop back up in her life until she died. Which, the fact that she almost had tonight was still really just sinking in. If it hadn’t been Cole, if he hadn’t realized it was her, if something hadn’t stopped him. Very dead. It was a sobering thought process, but Lila wasn’t freaked out. She was tired.

When Cole spat out the by now expected barb, Lila made a faint hmm sound. “Technically,” she pointed out slowly, “this time I think we’re here because I didn’t get into bed with him and you did.” Her tone wasn’t accusatory, nor did she sound upset by the insult. As much as she didn’t like them, she was too tired to fight back right now.

Lila sat down on the foot of the bed, slipping off her shoes and pulling her feet up so she could hug her knees. Chin propped on her arms, she watched Cole, a somber expression on her face. “Thank you,” she said after a long moment of silence. “For this. I know you didn’t have to, and probably didn’t want to.”

The blonde looked down at the floor, her brow pensive. Like she wanted to say something but wasn’t sure if she should. She suppressed a sigh, then after several moments looked back up at her former fiance. “Is that what you do now?” she asked cautiously, careful to not sound like she was judging him. “When you’re not getting beaten to a pulp in a boxing ring, anyway. Working for this guy, I mean. Hurting people.”

It was a hard concept to reconcile with the memory of the man she’d been engaged to. The one that had hunted criminals like this guy who wanted her dead for a slight insult. The one who had fought to protect people. Lila knew they were both different people now, but that seemed like a big change.

Cole wanted to pretend like he had no idea what he’d done to deserve his constant run-ins with Lila, but as little blame as he wanted to take for their ultimate downfall years prior, he knew he wasn’t perfect. He thought he was doing all of the right things by going to work, protecting the community and making a difference. Attempting to build a life for he and his young bride-to-be. Setting forth a plan to have those white picket fence dreams, a house full of kids, maybe even a dog. As it turned out, it wasn’t enough to keep Lila’s hands off of another man - and Cole wasn’t controlled enough to keep his hands off of the both of them in an entirely different fashion.

He’d never meant to hurt Lila. Truly, he hadn’t. After what she had done, though, did he regret causing her accidental harm? Well, no, not entirely. Karma, he thought, at the time - and walked out the door. Apparently, karma didn’t like being the scapegoat for that, and it had followed him around ever since. He wasn’t sure if his fall from grace only fueled the karma - or if now he had both it and the big man upstairs throwing these ever-annoying hurdles and surprises at him.

Though he was tired and didn’t want to fight, his comment did little to help prevent it. Naturally, she retorted, and it caused him to roll his eyes. He scoffed for a moment, considering lashing back at her - but it was early in the morning, and technically, she wasn’t wrong. So, he bit his tongue.

As much of strangers as they had become ever since the incident, this was still his first love - which they say you never forgot. After their break up, she did not, of course, remain his only lover, but she was one of very few, and to this day, remained the one person in the world that he had, without a doubt, been most intimately familiar with. Considering as much, he knew - despite all of the hatred that he felt towards her, and despite his constant desire to challenge and fight her - that she was genuinely grateful, and decided that no further shitty commentary was needed.

”You’re welcome,” he replied back in a sort of monotone voice, and after a long moment of appearing to debate how to respond. She was right - he didn’t want to do this - whatever they were doing, which seemed a whole lot like shacking up with his ex-fiance - even if it was just temporary. It was practically what nightmares were made of. He couldn’t just kill her though, either. She had been the only woman Cole had ever loved - not that it meant he owed her anything, but it definitely changed the rules a bit. Her standing here before him, alive was proof enough of that.

Shifting his weight amidst the uncomfortable silence, he wondered if that was all - and if they could just go to bed - but Lila appeared to have something more on her mind. After an uncomfortably long moment of staring at her, she finally let it out. He raised a brow and glanced to the side. Nobody had ever called him on it before - his new career choice. He had come a long way since being an Auror - instead of protecting people, now, he hurt them. He certainly didn’t expect the judgment to come from Lila - mostly on the principle that he’d cut ties with anyone from his past, or at least, in her case, tried - though, if he were being fair, she didn’t seem like she was judging him, which was definitely a departure. Her inquiry merely seemed...curious.

A silence fell between them, and he was clearly uncertain of how to respond. His weight shifted several more times, and his arms unfolded, fell to his side - and then re-crossed - before he could finally produce words. ”I...honor contracts, yes,” he said vaguely. He scoffed a bit. ”I don’t always get beaten to a pulp. I win, sometimes. A lot, actually,” he continued on, clearly verbalizing a thought process. ”It’s merely a coincidence that you’ve been present for two mishaps of mine.” Eyes tracing along the room, he made an obvious point to ignore her mention of hurting people.

Instead, once his eyes finally landed back on her, he prodded back a bit - if only to get the attention off of his new profession, and not really because he cared. ”So...you make wands now? Where’d you learn how to do that?” In all honesty, he wouldn’t have minded if she waved him off and retired to bed right about now, but he’d pretend to lend an ear if he had to if it meant getting her questions off of him - as well as making this situation even remotely less tense.
