Being married was the worst.

Well, Kate supposed being married to someone you loved and cherished was probably pretty nice. Getting drunk and marrying someone that - on a good day - you were ambivalent to sucked. Especially when you were contractually obligated to maintain the reputations of of your teams and weren’t allowed annul it or get divorced like the sham marriage it was.

Just wait out the media storm, her manager and Wes’ had said. In six months no one will care about this and you can end things quietly. HAH. They were only five months in, not six, but there was no end in sight to the media’s fascination with their “relationship.” They probably should have seen that coming; they were both popular athletes. Who had stunned everyone by eloping. People loved the forbidden love aspect. Kate got questions about it every time she went out, at every event she went to, at every interview she took.

It was exhausting. Not to mention, she couldn’t blow off steam in either of the ways she usually did. Sleeping around while supposedly in crazy love with Wes was beyond stupid for her career. And her manager didn’t want her partying, afraid that she’d blurt something out or do something stupid. That just left Quidditch. She stayed late at practice, working hard at trying to improve her game as well as work off her frustrations.

She walked up toward the front door of Wes’ home, waving at the photographers who were lurking with an insincere smile, the light catching the ring she was wearing. She didn’t stop to chat, instead rushing inside. “Honey, I’m home,” she called out as she shut the front door. Kate shrugged off her coat, tucking it and her back in the coat closet.

“Are you home?”

Smile. Snap. Grin. Snap. Hug. Snap. Kiss. Snap.

Wes was burning out from the charade that he and Kate Morello were playing for the wizarding world. What he thought would be a couple of weeks of his worst nightmare was rapidly approaching half a year of his worst nightmare. He kept thinking of ways to shake the blonde Keeper - but few options came to him, at least, not ones that wouldn't entirely cause Piper Hadley to explode and be the slippery slope to him losing his career that he had worked so hard for.

He could cheat, but there were two things wrong with that. For one, it wasn't him - and for two, even if he did it out of desperation, he would forever be that asshole, sullied and shamed for being the one who broke Quidditch's sweetheart's heart. He could go on a bender, but that risked actual physical consequences, not to mention, would probably result in Piper ripping him in half. He could make her out to be the crazy one, but then it would be he said vs. she said. Considering Wes's family, he highly doubted that he would get out of that scenario unscathed. The tabloids would have a field day with the Morellos.

That left another, safer option. Both of their managers' preferred ones: time. To grin and bear it, to suffer the consequences of their intoxicated actions. Put on a show, pretend to the world that they were young, star-crossed lovers. Eventually, they'd fade from the forefront of everyones' minds - they'd move on, and obsess over the next young "it" couple of the moment. Then, and only then - when nobody was looking, nobody cared - it could finally be over.

Until then...

Wes put the finishing touches on his homemade red sauce, sprinkling some fresh basil leaves in, when he heard the door open and close behind him. Kate's voice followed. It hit him like nails on a chalkboard, so jarring and terrible, a blatant reminder of his horrible choices - and commitment to never drink alcohol again. Recalling the blinds being open, however, Wes turned around and greeted Kate in the doorway from the kitchen with a warm smile. "Why hello, darling," he said both lowly and sarcastically - what, were the paparazzi going to hear them from all the way in here? - before crossing the distance between the kitchen and the entry, embracing her in a hug.

From outside the window, Wes saw lights flashing - truly above and beyond an invasion of privacy. Figuring he ought to give them a show, he planted his lips on hers for a brief kiss, all while side-eying the open window and reaching over to draw the blinds closed. As soon as they were, he detached from her and stepped away, heaving a burdened sigh. "Dinner's almost done," he offered, in no other way than just matter-of-factly. "Tagliatelle alla Bolognese, my grandfather's recipe," he added on.

Not like she would really care, anyway. This was all for show. Making nice, playing house. It would all be over soon. Right? Right. The Chaser hoped, anyway.

There had been a lot of talking about this whole dog and pony show when it had first been made clear to them that they were stuck with the consequences of their mistakes. A lot of fighting too. Kate couldn’t help but feel like she’d landed somewhere at the bottom of the heap. Stuck with what basically amounted to a morals contract, forbidden to live her life in the way she was accustomed. She’d also had to move out of her and Aubrianna Edeson’s flat and into the spare bedroom at Wesley’s home. She was still kind of salty about that one, even if she did have to admit that he had a nicer, more private place than she did.

Though, really, private was relative. With the blinds open and photographers outside, Wes made with the niceties. Kate was used to it by now, the chaste kiss on the corner of her lips and awkward hug that looked a lot warmer than it was. They had to put on this show every time other people might be around. At first it had been really strange; Kate’s life might have been a hot mess, but she was a pretty genuine person. Now it was practiced, though still uncomfortable. It was exhausting, all this pretending.

Kate echoed Wes’ sigh when he snapped the blinds closed. “We should just leave those shut,” she muttered, following him into the kitchen. “Mmmm, smells delicious,” she told him, peeking into what was on the stove. “Need any help?” Kate asked.

Despite assuming his answer would be no - Wes mostly avoided her when at all possible - Kate started moving around the kitchen to pull together plates and silverware and whatever else they’d need for dinner. Standing on her toes - this kitchen was not designed with her five foot frame in mind - she also pulled down two wine glasses. Picking up a bottle of red wine and a corkscrew, Kate opened it and poured them both a glass. “Wine?” she asked, handing him his own glass without waiting for a response.

Despite the fact that they clearly never needed to get drunk around each other ever again, lest more terrible things happen, Kate couldn’t help but be aware of the fact that Wes tolerated her a lot better when he’d had something to drink. Frankly, it was easier to be around him that way also. Kate wasn’t about to propose that they both become alcoholics for the rest of their sham marriage, of course. But a glass of wine over dinner might be just the thing to make dinner a less awkward affair.

“So, how was your day, dear?” Kate asked only marginally sarcastically as she leaned against the counter, sipping her wine.

Wes was never really certain that he had ever had white picket fence dreams. During his years at Hogwarts, he had been rather frivolous in his ways. He was the party boy of Ravenclaw, the popular, fun, social butterfly. He wasn't exactly promiscuous and didn't necessarily have a reputation, but he certainly flirted and dated around. Three things mattered back then: Quidditch, getting good enough grades so as to not let his stepsister and fellow Ravenclaw, Drina, make an embarrassment of him, and having a good time.

None of those three things really added up to chasing the married life, the settling down, the stability and consistency that some people yearned for.

Life after school remained much of the same. Wes had fueled all of his time and energy into Quidditch - and in doing so, grew impatient with those who didn't do the same. Which, as it turned out, in the world of professional Quidditch, happened to be a considerable handful of players. That was really the only thing that changed - Wes became less concerned with "having a good time" and geared more towards "being successful and making it." After watching career after career become burned by drug addiction, alcoholism, scandal, and downright debauchery, he decided that all work and no play was the proper route to follow.

Even if it did make him a dull boy.

It also didn't leave much in the way of time or effort to spend romancing a potential partner. The more time that passed, and the older that Wes got, the more he was uncertain if he really cared about it. Sometimes, a part of him did admittedly feel lonely, but the other part of him knew - maybe not so much from personal experience - but from the media, from friends, from family - that a relationship likely required more attention and energy than what he was willing to offer.

Heaving a sigh of relief as the blinds drew shut and the media's prying eyes were forced to rest until they would inevitably have to exit once again, Wes internally acknowledged that - yes - even an fake relationship was exhausting. He couldn't imagine a real one.

"Agreed," he concurred with the Keeper, which honestly was a rare thing, but he could appreciate that they both seemed to be on the same page as to how ridiculous and draining this whole sham marriage was. He raised a curious eyebrow when she appeared to be interested in what was on the menu for this evening, watching almost defensively as she leaned in to take a better look, ready to jump should she get the bright idea to add her own flair or ingredients to their dinner. If there was one thing besides Quidditch that Wes prided himself in, it was his homemade Italian cooking - and anyone who threatened that was as good as an enemy.

Thankfully, Kate stepped away, and Wes found himself reeling internally out of shock that the blonde hadn't just done something to ruin his culinary masterpiece. He found himself doing it a lot, lately, actually - it was like the more time they spent together, the more that he naturally assumed that her actions would follow the same vein of "in the worst way possible." When she didn't fit the mold that he'd created for her in his own head, he was often colored surprised. It was almost as if she wasn't as bad as he could've sworn she was - but it wasn't like he would ever admit that aloud.

The Chaser shrugged off her offer of help and busied himself with finishing dinner. Her second question was one that he actually had a response to. Before offering his reply, his eyes scanned scrutinously over the bottle in her hand - he half expected her to be holding some hard liquor, or even worse - attempting to pair a white wine where it didn't belong - but again, he found himself in that weird situation where her actions defied his opinion of her. Subconsciously, his lips tugged upwards in a conservative smile. "Yes, please."

It wasn't long before dinner was complete - and Wes migrated with the two pots that he had onto trivets in the middle of the table, family-style. Wes scoffed slightly at the attempt at small talk - even months later, it was an uncomfortable mix of ingenuity and obligation that he was never quite sure how to handle. "Uneventful," he offered his response in a simple word. It wasn't untrue. Today was one of those days that he was sometimes thankful for - where nothing note-worthy happened. That usually meant the day was drama-free, which was how he preferred to live.

"How about yours, love?" he asked robotically. Taking his seat, he looked across from him towards her empty one and nearly served himself - before his neck craned up like he had suddenly remembered her presence, realizing that she was still back against the counter. The transition from perpetual bachelor to married man was a rough one, to say the least - especially when it hadn't exactly been a conscious decision that had some sort of build-up to it.

He ushered her over with a waving gesture - now, he wasn't exactly of the feeling to be the chauvinistic gentlemen and pull her chair out for her, but he also had been raised with enough manners to know that he shouldn't serve himself and start eating without at least inviting her to join. "Come, sit down, you can tell me about your day over here. Get it while it's hot. Not that you wouldn't enjoy it either way - this sauce is to die for. It's just better fresh," he offered more than his usual one-word canned responses with a confident smirk. When the topic was something that he prided himself in or was passionate about, discussion...just came easier, he supposed.

And, well...hopefully the wine would help, too.
