Jean Duval

Jean gazed down onto his watch as he watched the time slowly tick away. The end of the first month back at school was nearing an end, and boy was he already wishing for a break. He is getting up there in years, already pushing sixty. Despite his jovial demeanor and constant flirting with female staff and any of the opposite gender, he has been finding himself to be slowing down in his age. Wondering if he should open up a vineyard in Southern France. It had always been a dream of his in his adulthood. See, Jean loves wine. Mostly because its made of his favourite thing in the world: grapes.

Though he doubted his wife would appreciate it very much if he suddenly retired from teaching and just opened up his winery. He also thoroughly enjoys teaching, so he’ll probably stay there till the day he dies. Jean just hoped that would be for another few decades. Maybe his tired body is just from how rowdy all these children are. They are all gathered this year, the four major schools. So many students to wrangle. Such exhausting activity, keeping track of not only Beauxbatons students, but also the others as well. Thankfully there were other teachers to help about, but still.

He had decided it would be best to venture down into the village of Hogsmeade, maybe spend some time at one of its fine little taverns and get himself something heavy to drink. Who knows, maybe he’ll find a nice girl to spend some time with. Wouldn’t it be exciting though? So off he went, walking down the path towards the village, Jean started to whistle a tune to himself. Despite his tiredness, he was starting to get into the idea. And besides, going down to the village could prove to be a wonderful time. Taking a small adventure over there and seeing the sights, just couldn’t go wrong with that.

Hands in his pockets, he started to make his way down, students passing him going to and from Hogsmeade, Jean smiled one of his charming smiles and said hello to each of them. Just because he was tired didn’t mean he was going to be rude and not say hello. The perfect image of a gentleman should always greet others warmly, and that is exactly what he’ll continue to do for the rest of his days. Though his lecherous ways are hardly worthy of being called the actions of a gentleman. At least his wife doesn’t know all of his conquests, before and after the marriage.

Walking into the village proper now, Jean looked at each building as he walked along the path. His eyes scanning each sign, hoping for some place that at least didn’t scream uncivilized. Which seemed to be hard to do, as there was very few places he could actually venture towards for a drink. Walking into the Hogshead Inn, Jean smiled and gave a nod towards the innkeep and the many patrons within the fine establishment. It reminded him of a tavern he had been to back in his travelling days. Ahh, to be young again.

Approaching the counter, he smiled at the individual on the other end. “Bonsoir, may I have a glass of red wine please?” he asked, taking out the necessary money. He was given some disgruntled looks by some of the other patrons, but he shrugged it off. Just some uncultured swine is all. Taking his glass, he raised it towards the barkeep. “Mercy.” he said, flashing a charming smile. Turning from the counter, he walked across the room towards a table located near the fireplace that still roared into the afternoon. Such a nice little thing to have, keeps the bones warm.

Taking a seat at the table, Jean took a sip of his wine and closed his eyes. Savouring the taste, a small smile crept across his lips. It wasn’t the best wine he ever had, but it was decent for a place like this. Opening his eyes, he relaxed into his chair and just sipped away at his wine. Absorbing in the atmosphere of the place and its rustic feel. It was quite a nice little place for sure.

Ever since Aub's best friend, Kate Morello had run off to Vegas and found herself suddenly married to Quidditch's resident brood dude, Wesley Morello, Aub had spent more time alone than what she was ever used to. She missed her blonde BFF, but supposed it was healthy to get out and meet new people than to cling on her roommate. Besides, it wasn't fair to hang all of her social interactions on the other girl. Even so, Aub could not tell a lie - going out was far more fun with Kate.

The lack of a the bubbly blonde would not deter Aub from venturing out this evening, however tempting it was to curl up in sweatpants, eat ice cream, and watch some sappy flick on the couch of their shared flat. As forward-thinking as the Seeker usually was not, Aub had some business at Spintwitches in Hogsmeade, and thought it best to handle that this evening when party-going wasn't the most pressing thing on her agenda. Shopping wasn't really her thing - but this was for Quidditch supplies, so she wasn't exactly going to complain. Buying an upgrade for her broom was an entirely different rush from buying a new shirt. Two totally different beasts.

The loud chatter in Spintwitches at this time of evening was good indication to Aub that it must be a Hogsmeade weekend for Hogwarts. Such weekends were times that the redhead remembered fondly - she caused a lot of trouble and got up to no good anytime a bit of freedom was awarded to her, which was, perhaps a driving force in being a frequent attendee to detention hall. After meeting a few eager school-aged fans at Spintwitches and signing autographs, Aub decided there was nothing wrong with hanging out in the village for a bit longer - perhaps have a drink (or two), meet a few more fans - heck, maybe she'd luck out and find her sister, Lelia, who had been avoiding her for...oh, going on a good two or so years now.

Wrapping up at Spintwitches, Aub stepped back out onto the crowded sidewalks of Hogsmeade, meandering slowly down the path towards the local bars and pubs. She window shopped, even popped into Honeydukes real fast for her favorite treat, a Pumpkin Pastie. Unfortunately, her lingering found her caught outdoors when a sudden downpour began. Typical Scotland. Caught unaware, Aub found herself darting from the doorway of Honeydukes, down the road, and into the entrance of the Hogs Head Inn.

She burst in, laughing at her misfortune as she had been soaked, head to toe in the surprise rainfall. Taking it in stride, she waved at the barkeep, partially in familiarity, and partially in getting his attention that she'd like to order. "Harold - a shot of whiskey and a hot toddy," she shouted in his direction over the crowd, bee lining for the fireplace in the back corner of the bar. Reaching it, she stood directly in front of it for a few moments, wringing her shirt out from the bottom, briefly , and rather mindlessly exposing her midsection. Flattening the shirt out as best as she could, she turned to face the patron whose direct view and warmth of the fireplace she'd blocked, and signaled for the bartender again. "Make that two shots," she said, pointing down to the table, as if indicating for him to deliver it to her here when ready.

Inviting herself into the empty chair at the preoccupied table next to the fireplace, Aub giggled breathily. "Freak rainstorm. Don't worry, I have a drink coming for your troubles. Stealing the fireplace, invading your space, ya know," she offered, though as she spoke, it somehow seemed less sincere and more business - as if she made a habit of encroaching on others' space, and made up for it by buying drinks. Which, to be fair, was probably the most accurate takeaway from that interaction.

She beamed upwards at the bartender as he delivered two shots of whiskey neat and a stein full of hot toddy to the table. He left without payment, rather well-acquainted with Aubrianna Edeson. Such a girl didn't pay by the drink - running up a tab was definitely more her style. Pushing the shot glass towards the gentleman with whom she now shared the table with, Aub took her shot glass into her own petite hand, and raised it up. "To drinks that warm the body and soul...cheers!"

Jean Duval

Crossing his legs as he sat on the chair, Jean enjoyed the rustic atmosphere of the Hog’s Head Inn. It reminded him of the places he used to visit during his youth as he travelled France and some surrounding countries during his days at both the Daily Prophet and the Ministry. Taverns and inns out in the country, in small villages far away from big cities. Though of course, as he grew older his tastes grew more refined. Trading the rowdy tavern scenery to the more elegant ballrooms. Mingling with well off people and talking away the evening. No more staying up till dawn, much to his dismay.

Sitting near the fireplace, Jean enjoyed the heat it gave. Compared to the cool air outside. If only he had a newspaper or a book to read, then the whole scenery would be painted. Taking a sip of his red wine, he savoured the taste for a moment before putting the glass onto the table before him. His hand still resting on the wine glass, to which he wondered if the barkeep even used these glasses for anything else. Did these glasses even see use if nobody ever ordered wine? Bit odd, no? The harsh pitter patter against the window caused the older Frenchman to turn and gaze at it.

Seems he was lucky, rain had started to come down. Seems to be a bit of a downpour. Good thing he had been sitting here for a few good moments already. Wouldn’t want to get caught in that. Turning his gaze away from the window, as the weather didn’t really interest him. Jean picked up his wine glass once again and took another sip. Everything was calm, at least to the corner he had decided to occupy. The talking wasn’t excessively loud, and if one listened hard enough, music could be heard coming from somewhere. However, it seemed it wasn’t meant to be.

A sudden burst through the door, what might be considered a spitfire just strided through the door laughing loudly, possibly because the stranger got caught in the rain. The individual, who if the older man had to guess, is a female, moved to the counter and called out to the barkeep. Though Jean sighed as he placed his wine glass back down onto the table and went back to his sort of mini relaxation. Resting his left hand on his knee, Jean just began to contemplate the school year. It certainly is interesting, and he’d possibly have much to do in the coming months.

Though it seems he would have no luck as to his peaceful relaxation, as the spitfire who had entered just moments prior has now commandeered the chair just across from him. Cocking an eyebrow at her, he listened to her explanation as to why she came down here. Offering a warm smile, Jean waved her off. “Pas de soucis. Please, warm yourself. Wouldn’t want you to catch a cold from the dreadfully cold rain. I’m more than happy to share my space with someone as vibrant as you, mon cher.” he spoke with care to his words, like a worried lover would.

Even though her words didn’t have the kindness to them, and had a more practical and business approach. He didn’t mind. When you spend hours a day with teenagers and children, you can expect to receive so many different greetings in your week. This year, he would be worried if he didn’t get any new ones, as all the schools are together as one this year. However, Jean’s eyebrow cocked again when the bartender arrived with two glasses of amber liquid, placing them on the table. Well, this is unexpected.

Shifting his wine glass to the other side of the table, putting it off to the side. He let out a small chuckle as she slid it over to him. Picking the shot glass up, for it would be rude to not take it. And quite frankly, he is a gentleman, so it would be even more rude since a lady ordered it for him. “À la nouvelle compagnie, acclamations.” he replied, downing the shot. It burned compared to his wine, and if memory serves correctly, has been roughly eleven years since he last had whiskey.

Letting the burn run through his body, Jean stifled a bit of a cough, as it had been awhile for him. “Oh! Thank you very much.” he thanked her profusely, with a curt nod. “Allow me to introduce myself, I am Professor Jean Duval - of Beauxbatons.” he said, extending his hand for a handshake. “May I have the name of the charmant woman accompanying me?”

Being "loud" or "disruptive" wasn't really a concern of the redhead's - especially in a bar. She'd frequently been told of her sometimes explosive excitement, but rather than taking those sorts of words in a derogatory manner, she embraced them all as quite the opposite. To her, they were compliments. When people nervously laughed it off, not correcting her misinterpretation, it only reinforced to the girl that her ways were not only acceptable, but that they made her desirable to be around.

This seemed true of a lot of Quidditch stars and socialites. For the most part, Aub was the company that she kept. She wasn't the first young, professional athlete to behave in such a manner, and she would definitely not be the last. It was almost like it was part of the contract. She and her friends...they were just young and having fun. There was nothing wrong with that, really, right?

Though the Seeker did, at times, seem like she had little else to offer than drunken shenanigans, there was, actually more that met the eye. Such things as the man before her speaking French - and her actually understanding - reminded her of that. Ahh...France. The land of her family. It had been home for her many years ago - before her father was hauled off, imprisoned for dark magic, and before her mother had gone on the lam to protect her fathers' secrets. Before living with her grandmother in England and transferring to Hogwarts. It was a little known fact about the Quidditch star, but it was true - Aubrianna Edeson was a mademoiselle.

"Merci beaucoup pour votre hospitalité, gentil monsieur," she said with a giggle, which mostly indicated that her intent was more to impress or show off, rather than to actually carry on a conversation in French. She raised her eyebrows at him, as if gauging his reaction. Or interest. Whichever. Either way, she noticeably nestled a little further into the seat, accepting his invitation to "share his space." She was glad to not only hear that she'd have a place to rest, but she seemed additionally pleased at his receiving of her "gift" in shot form. "Cheers!" she announced, switching back to English, raising the small vial up in a typical "cheers" fashion, before bringing it to her lips.

The party queen of the Quidditch scene, Aub downed the potent shot without so much as a flinch. In fact, she licked her lips afterwards and made a slight "ahh" sound, as if saying, "mmm, refreshing...more, please!" Ahh, such was the life of a young, hard-partying, copious amounts of alcohol-absorbing twenty-somethings. Considering whiskey was probably her blood type these days, she didn't need to chase her shot, though after a minute or two, she reached out for her hot toddy and took a sip, mostly to preoccupy her hands. She noticed the mans' cough and smiled, though she dared not taunt anyone for being out of practice. Besides, who knew - maybe he had a cold. She'd give him the benefit of the doubt, anyway.

As he extended his hand and introduced himself, she extended her own and shook, her expression switched between one of recognition and excitement. "Oh my gosh, Professor? Professor Duval? You look so different," she blurted a bit haphazardly, though keen to let him know that when she said "different," it wasn't a bad thing, she just as quickly added in a bit more of a hush now - like what she were saying was taboo - "The past ten years have treated you well!" She winked.

Resuming her normal volume, she obliged his query as to her identity. "Aubrianna Edeson! I took your class in...gosh. I think it was 2010? 2011? 2012? Maybe all three?" she laughed, waving her hand in the air in front of her, as if brushing her words off. "Oh, it doesn't matter when. I loved your class. Wow...so you're still teaching? I bet you're still everyone's favorite Professor," she complimented him, though there was something naggingly shameless in the way that she did so. Perhaps it was the slight bat of her eyelashes or the twirl and flip of her hair over her shoulder.

Jean Duval

For having taught charms for the past 32 years, Jean has seen many students come and go throughout his teaching career. Colleagues as well, for he doubted he would ever leave his post in the end. Despite his dream of one day opening up a vineyard in Southern France, he just enjoyed teaching too much, and quite frankly he enjoyed watching them all grow up as well. Them becoming excited for charms also drew a smile across his face, as his class, in his most humble opinion, is the most important subject. It has the most spells in it and the most useful ones for a day to day life.

Just looking around this humble tavern shows just how true to life that is, with all the charms that had been used to conjure up all the things within the building. Even outside there are charms being used to stop the downpour that had befallen on the small hamlet. It was his favourite subject in school, and served him well out of school as well. Working for the Daily Prophet didn’t exactly prove the best place for his charms, but working for the Ministry? Well that did. Specifically the department he worked in… using Obliviate to erase the minds of Muggles on magical events to which they have just witnessed.

That part of his life wasn’t the most gentlemanly period of his life, but he learned some valuable lessons there. The one thing is how wonderful memories are, and how great it is to live life to your fullest. Something he tries to impart upon his Sanguine students, who love to do just that. Well, the vast majority of them. There are a few students who don’t particularly partake in the partying, but they do embrace some aspect of what it means to be a Sanguine, and they have done him proud.

Shaking his mind, Jean looked at the lovely spitfire sitting across from him, she seemed familiar, though he didn’t exactly piece it together. Remember, he’s been teaching for almost three decades, at some point the lines just blur. Hearing the woman speak French, Jean cocked an eyebrow. It was quite unexpected to hear it from an adult who didn’t travel with the rest of the school out here in England, so Jean felt surprised, but also impressed by the young woman. A small curl formed at the corner of his mouth, turning into a coy grin at the woman across from him.

Downing that shot of whiskey like there is no tomorrow caused Jean to stifle a chuckle. Reminded him of his younger days, the days of more capable drinking. Now she seemed familiar, reminding him of a girl back in the 80s who drank a nearly six foot three hundred pound man under the table. Jean of course wooed her later that evening, and she proved to be quite a vocal one. Ahh, memories, such wonderful things. Something he’ll forever cherish and enjoy, all the way to his last day. His coy grin still on affect, he got even more comfortable in his seat, leaning back and switching which leg rested on each other.

After his greeting, she spouted off how he looks different, and a recognition upon hearing his name. Cocking an eyebrow, Jean looked at her puzzlingly. Though thankfully she continued and said the past decade has been good to him. Giving her a thankful nod, Jean let out a chuckle. “Merci, not many of my former students have said that about me.” he said, thinking about how most of the former students he’s run into are now surly grown adults and are very serious about life, nice to see someone energetic once in awhile.

She in turn gave her own introduction, the name Edeson sounding familiar. Ahh yes, those Edeson’s. When she started to think of what year she took charms, he let out a small laugh. “My dear, charms is a main subject at any school, so no matter which year you were in, you most likely took my class.” he said reaching for his glass of wine, picking it up by the stem. “Yes, I’m still teaching. It’ll be hardpress to get me to leave. And I would hope I’m at least in the top three of professors.” he said with a laugh, bringing the glass of wine closer to himself. Jean did remember the name Aubrianna, though it has been quite some time since he last heard the name.

“But how have you been, dear girl? It’s been quite some time, and my, have you grown into a lovely lady. If you don’t mind your old professor saying so.” he spoke, with a warm tone and a smile to accompany it. The man might be quite a few years her senior, but he would like to believe he still has it in him, to charm any woman.
