“Are you absolutely positive he isn’t staying over? There’s a spare set of sheets I can wash for the couch-”

“Mum, for the last time, he’s not staying the night. I only invited him over to tutor him, it’s for school.”

Daisi sighed at the doubtful look on Elaine Prewitt’s face, ducking her head so that her mother wouldn’t see the flustered redness across her cheeks at having to defend her tutelage yet again for the hundredth time in the past twenty-four hours. She knew that her mother was mostly joking, really, but it was starting to reach the point where it was a little too unbearable. She was already wishing that the time had come and gone for her and Kit’s get-together, just so that she could put it behind her and not have her mother look at that every time the subject came up.

At fifteen minutes until his proposed arrival time, Daisi shot up from her seat and cleared her throat. “Mum, I’m going to the Apparition point.”

“Do you want me to-”

“No. You can meet him when he gets here. It’s not what you think. At all.”

She really wished she could take an eraser and smear off the smirk that appeared on her mother’s face. With a dissatisfied huff, Daisi stalked out the door and into the summer heat and the streets of their small wizarding neighborhood in Toulouse.

Breathing in the summer air, Daisi knew that if Kit hadn’t been coming over today, she’d be in the parks along the Garonne, likely with her sketchbook out and drawing the people and things that she saw. Or, otherwise, helping her mother in their small gardenhouse, grooming the plants that her mother painstakingly grew as their source of income. As it was, her day was slotted entirely for this so-called tutoring session, for which, if truth be told, Daisi was exceptionally nervous.

When she’d first overheard Bastien Argente and Christian Travere arguing about whether or not Kit would be allowed to continue to seventh year Transfiguration, it had been a no-brainer to Daisi to just up and volunteer her services to help. She probably shouldn’t have been eavesdropping, but since she’d been on her way to see Professor Argente anyway to wish him a good summer, she couldn’t have helped it. Daisi had impulsively, and instinctively, offered to help. Not just because she had a naturally giving heart, but also because she knew vague details about Kit’s situation. Things she’d noticed, over the course of the year, that made her heart ache for him at the thought of having to go home having failed.

But, now that it was finally here, Daisi realized she’d never actively tutored someone before. So, she had absolutely no idea what she was doing, and she was pretty sure it was going to show. Either way, she was determined to help, and she hoped it would be enough.

The Apparition point for their small wizarding corner of Toulouse was a ten minute walk from her and her mother’s humble one-story, two-bedroom house. Daisi smiled and greeted her neighbors that she saw as she walked, and many of them greeted her back. It wasn’t so much that she was close with any of them, so much as she simply knew their names, knew things that she took in by walking by their homes so often. Like how Ms. Bonnaire’s oldest son’s family had gone missing (Daisi had offered to help in any way she could when she’d caught on), and how Mr. Marchand and his wife were planning on moving out of France to live with their Muggle relatives in Spain. They’d be leaving their cat with Daisi when they left at the end of August (she was going to see if she could bring two cats back to Beauxbatons instead of just one).

Daisi glanced down at her phone once she reached the Apparition point in one of the small parks at the edge of their neighborhood. Right on time. But no Kit. Letting out a quiet sigh, she took a seat at one of the nearby park benches to wait. And wait. She wasn’t entirely sure how long she waited, only that she was beginning to worry that maybe he wasn’t going to be allowed to come, that maybe-

She squeaked in surprise when a loud pop! startled her out of her reverie, and she looked up to see Kit not far from her. “Oh! Kit! Sorry- I- I was getting worried about you. Did you make the Apparition okay?” To some degree, it was a little odd to be addressing him so informally, and yet, for Daisi, it came like second nature. They weren’t exactly friends, but Daisi couldn’t say she disliked him either. He was, when he thought nobody was looking, rather sweet. She approached him, skin a little red from the heat, before she flusteredly gestured around her. “Er, welcome to Toulouse! My house is back this way, we can start walking if you’d like. Did you bring your books?”

This was, technically, Daisi’s late birthday present.

When the idea had popped up that the SPELLCRAFT champions should get together at some point during the summer, as friends rather than competitors, Daisi had not hesitated to jump on that bandwagon. While it was true that she genuinely didn’t think of herself as a worthy champion (she still didn’t, even after the tournament was over), the people with whom she’d shared the tournament didn’t seem to think so. They made her feel welcome, like she was one of them, and honestly it wasn’t a feeling that the Beauxbatons girl was entirely accustomed to.

She wasn’t used to having a group of friends. For most of her time at school, she’d been a bit of a loner. This was new. And Daisi was quickly coming to learn that she loved it.

Then, plans had finalized that they should all meet up in Jamaica, for the World Cup. Which was… a big step for Daisi, who’d never traveled further than Berlin (or, technically, Hogwarts), especially since she wasn’t a huge Quidditch fan personally. But her mother had eagerly bought her a ticket, and a hotel stay, as a late seventeenth birthday present and a reward for having been a Champion. (While Daisi had suggested they make the trip as mother and daughter, she heavily suspected that her mum hadn’t been able to afford the second ticket.)

So now, Daisi was here for the last part of the tournament, with what little money she and her mother could spare, a bikini, and a newfound wanderlust for travel.

Everyone had agreed to meet up at the beach, which was where Daisi was now, decked out in (what she thought was) a fitting blue bikini, sunglasses, and looking almost entirely different from the mousy girl she’d been at the tournament. Or, at the very least, like someone who wasn’t terrified to enjoy herself. There was still sunblock plastered all over her (she was still burning, she was so pale), and a sketchbook still in her lap as she etched the scene of the ocean before her.

That is, until she heard someone calling her name, at which the redhead perked up, and looked up over her shoulder-

“Oh. Bonjour!” Immediately, a bright and cheerful grin lightened her face, as she hastily set her sketchbook aside amongst her things, before scrambling to her feet. Despite the butterflies of anxiety that bubbled in her stomach at the concept of socializing, Daisi still found that she couldn’t contain her joy. She had friends! Charging through the sand, the tiny redhead smiled broadly as she lurched towards the first arrival, wordlessly launching her arms around them in a light but heartfelt hug. “Come on, I grabbed us all a good spot,” she said, in her accented English,. “How’ve you been?”

The problem with going to a boarding school for witches and wizards lied in the fact that parents weren’t immediately available, a problem even more exacerbated by the fact that they weren’t even in the right country because of this… this… SPELLCRAFT tournament. Daisi Prewitt, after the welcoming feast had ended, and she’d been briefed about being Beauxbatons’ champion, was feeling that pressure rather intensely as she sat in a foreign corridor, completely dumbfounded at what had just transpired.

Her, a champion? She genuinely didn’t see how that was even possible. For the entirety of her time at Beauxbatons, Daisi had been one of those students who kept her head down and coasted underneath the radar. She did her schoolwork, spent time with her small circle of friends, snuggled with her cat, doodled in sketchbooks, and… well, she was just a regular girl. As far as she was concerned, there wasn’t anything particularly… special about her. She didn’t even have perfect grades (Potions was just awful, even though her mother often tried to tutor her over the summers).

As her mind fretted and fussed, there were students that passed that gave her odd, hostile, or sympathetic looks. One or two tried to greet her enthusiastically, and when Daisi all but shied away and mumbled a greeting back, they meandered on their way and left her be. Even this was more attention than she was typically used to. And she had no idea what to do with it.

Her first instinct, as it was with most things, was to tell her mother. But any letter she crafted and sent out tonight wouldn’t reach Elaina Prewitt until tomorrow, and any response wouldn’t get to her until tomorrow night. This felt like something that had to get rectified now. Not that she was sure what could even be rectified. It didn’t feel right to just back out or give up, but she honestly didn’t think that her representing a school of people who hardly even knew who she was would be a good idea. Surely someone more popular or skilled would have been better for such a task.

There really was only one person she could think of that she could turn to. A professor that, she had no doubt, may very well have spoken on her behalf when it had come to choosing a champion for the school. Perking up, Daisi pushed herself from the bench she’d been sitting on and asked around until she had directions to what would serve as Bastien Argente’s office and quarters this year. As much as she was loving the Hogwarts ambience, this was still only her first night in the castle. She had absolutely no idea what she was doing, or where she was going.

Praying that, eventually, she’d ended up at the right door, Daisi swallowed and reached up to knock quietly on the Transfiguration professor’s door. If he wasn’t inside, then she was determined to wait until he returned; curfew hadn’t yet passed, and she was positive she had maybe another hour before she needed to go rest. But regardless… she just needed someone to talk to, someone who could explain. After such a surprise, she felt she was owed that, at least.

All in all, it was beginning to feel as though the SPELLCRAFT was going to be more trouble than it was worth.

It had only been a few days since she’d been selected, but already, Daisi could feel a change. There were people who, in the other five years she’d been at Beauxbatons, hadn’t known who she was who suddenly wanted to be her friend. There were people that had no reason to hate her that threw her dirty looks. Professors smiled more at her, or frowned more at her, and it was all simply attention that she wasn’t accustomed to. It wasn’t to say that Daisi hated it, exactly, but it was unsettling.

Tonight, the SPELLCRAFT dinner to introduce the champions to one another had been nice, and Daisi had enjoyed herself somewhat, but right now all she wanted was some time with a sketchbook and some quiet. Crowds, attention, and all of that had never been her forte, and she simply wanted the security that being quietly creative tended to lend her. Composing and bringing to life a world that only she could see, that only she cared about, it was… nice. Relaxing. And as she was heading back up to the Beauxbatons’ wing of Hogwarts castle alone, that was the sole goal that she had in mind.

It was taking her a little while, though, because Hogwarts was most definitely not the school she was used to. She took a wrong turn or two, which is probably how Chi and Lydia had managed to surpass her on their way back, if they did go back, but was pretty sure that she was on track at this point.

Daisi wasn’t sure how close she was, but in the somewhat near distance, she could hear the telltale signs of some kind of party that someone was throwing, and she had to resist the urge to smile. She liked to think that, even though this whole SPELLCRAFT thing had ended up becoming something stressful and worrisome for her, that everyone else was having fun. And that was what mattered, right? Fun and new friendships. As long as everyone else was happy, she was sure that she could find some solace in that… but the excessive partying had to stop at some point, right?

Maybe it didn’t. She snorted to herself as she turned a corner that she hoped would bring her closer to a bed and a sketchpad, but ended up running smack dab into a face she recognized.

“Oh, merde,” she gasped, wincing as she took a step or two back and tugged on her blouse to make it sit right again. “I, er, I’m so sorry, I’m just trying to get back to the dorms. I’m guessing you’re either coming to or going from that party back there, I didn’t mean to, um, well. Get in your way. Sorry!”
