Quidditch practice was long since over, evening was setting in, and everyone should have been back up in the castle. Actually, Cooper HAD been back up the castle. He’d gone back up with everyone else after he’d let practice out. He and Gabby and Luke had settled down in the common room to work on their homework. But something that had happened at practice was eating at Cooper. He couldn’t get a maneuver out of his mind and hadn’t been able to make it work at practice. It was going to bother him until he went back out there and got it right, so he closed his charms book and announced he needed to go back down the the pitch for a little bit.

Gabrielle Louise Sauveterre had offered to go with him, but she’d had that look that told him they’d end up shagging in the locker room if he took her up on that. So he just kissed her and reminded her how made her uncle would be if she didn’t finish her Charms homework and promised her he’d be back soon.

He jogged down the pitch, thinking he had a good half an hour to hour left of daylight left with which to work. It was too dangerous to fly with bludgers at night, at least alone where no one would know if he got knocked out. So he’d have to call it quits before then. Okay. He could totally get it down by then.

Cooper popped into the Gryffindor locker room, making a beeline for his locker. Opening it, he grabbed his bat and broom. Hmm, to bother with pads or no? It’d take more time, but it’d be safer. While he was pondering that, Cooper realized all of a sudden that he wasn’t the only one down here. Turning, he realized he was sharing the locker room with Jared Cameron Pearson .

“Oh hey, man. What are you doing down here?” he asked in a friendly tone. He and the younger boy had known each other for a few years, and Cooper would call them pretty friendly. He wasn’t as close to him as he was Gabby and Luke, but he genuinely liked Jared. However, Jared wasn’t on the team so while Cooper was happy to see him, he was also slightly confused.

ared had loved Quidditch from the moment he learned about it during his first year. Flying class was not only exciting for the Gryffindor, but he earned high marks in the class, displaying a natural ability to get on a broomstick and manage basic maneuvers - especially for a Muggle Born, whose only experience with magical folk and broomsticks, up until that point, had been Halloween decorations depicting witches on brooms.

The statistical aspect of it was also particularly thrilling for Jared. The way his mind worked...he thrived off of tracking those ever-changing numbers, and eventually, learning how to make predictions based off of them. By the age of twelve, he could have been running an underground gambling ring at Hogwarts - if only that were his personality. Instead, he kept it all to himself, between his brain and a small notebook that he kept under his pillow.

While tracking Quidditch appeased the analytical side of his brain, playing Quidditch was also certainly attractive, in different ways. Unfortunately for Jared, his social anxiety had held him back from ever going out onto the Pitch during his second year and trying out. He probably could have made the Gryffindor house team - and with a little bit of help, had the potential to turn his natural talent for flying into excellence. It never happened, though, and after much anger in the heat of the moment, followed by self-loathing in the months following, Jared eventually decided to initiate a change in his life.

Ok, so, he never went back out for the Quidditch team again - but he wasn't prepared to let his love of Quidditch go completely.

It didn't take long to figure out the Quidditch teams' practice schedules. Give or take a few of them, the times were mostly consistent as to which teams could hold practice at what times or on which days. Finding the holes in the schedule, Jared took advantage, and began practicing, alone, during those times that he could do so alone, without the fear of being found out. Most of these times fell during the evening, while students were attending study hall, attending dinner, or otherwise winding down in their Common Rooms. The time of year dictated just how much time he had to work with - spring and early fall provided him several hours before sundown, whereas the window was much smaller in late fall and winter.

Today found him in the latter of the two situations - fall was winding down, and winter was approaching. By his estimate, he'd have maybe an hour to just...fly. To let loose. To feel free. Maybe even smash a Bludger or two to release the stress of the week. It would be perfect. It was perfect. He had planned it all so carefully - and for the last several years - it had worked in his favor, without incident. Today was like any other day...

Except that it was about to not be. Gearing up in the locker room, all by his lonesome, Jared had his sets sight on just flying casually, maybe trying a few new moves that he'd been working on. Most of what he did was generic - applicable to most positions on the field - flying techniques, mostly. He was just sliding up his second kneepad (he wasn't amazing after all, and safety first was a good policy to live by) when he was started by the sound - and presence - of someone else.

Cooper Felix Santiago had seemed to appear in a flash, far too quickly for him to scurry away and hide. As the older Gryffindor boy acknowledged and addressed him, Jared gulped, blinking rapidly. His face felt hot as he fumbled for an excuse. "Cleaning duty," he blurted immediately, as it was the first thing that came to his mind...ignoring the fact that he didn't exactly need knee pads to sweep the floors. Cooper probably saw right through him, but he didn't bother offering any additional explanation. He didn't like socializing any more than what he needed to, but as if in his own defense (acknowledging his previous one was probably useless), he retorted defiantly to the older boy. "What are you doing here?"

Cooper had loved Quidditch since he was a little boy. He and his little brother had had mini toy brooms, and he’d watched games ever since he was old enough to understand the rules. More than that, he was good at it. He wasn’t really one to boast, but he also knew he’d earned his captaincy, and kept proving his worth on the team with every game. Honestly if his dream of following in his dad’s footsteps didn’t come throw, playing professionally was dream number two.

So all in all, it wasn’t particularly out of character for him to be practicing on his own. The Gryffindor beater hadn’t had that much time lately to do it, however, what with deciding to bring his grades up last year and spending time with Gabby. Still, he was pretty sure no other teams had the pitch booked, and figured he’d have the place to himself. The fact that he didn’t, however, wasn’t really that much of a surprise. Just who the other person was kind of was.

As Jared Cameron Pearson claimed he was on cleaning duty, Cooper’s eyes flicked over his appearance - pads and all, before flashing back up to his face. “That’s cool, dude,” he said, grabbing his pads out of his locker and starting to apply them. It obviously wasn’t true, but Cooper wasn’t the kind of guy to press. Jared was obviously down here to play, and if he didn’t want anyone to know that then Cooper could be cool about it.

Cooper glanced back up as Jared asked him what he was doing, shrugging his shoulders loosely. ”I’m having trouble with a move,” he admitted freely. ”I’m hoping to get it down before the next match. Give Gaines a real surprise, you know,” The rivalry between himself and Slytherin captain Liam Robert Gaines wasn’t probably the worst in Hogwarts’ history. But it was pretty intense, and had come to actual blows last year. With both of them being promoted to Captain this year, it probably would again if he was being honest.

”Hey, do you wanna do me a favor?” Cooper asked, as if the idea was just coming to him. Which, it kind of just had. ”I could use someone to practice with. Especially someone I don’t practice with all the time. You get used to their playing styles. You’d really be helping me out, man.”

Jared figured his plan ought to go off without a hitch - he had a reputation for allowing his frustration to influence his actions, and thus was no stranger to detention and other various punishments. Claiming that he was on cleaning duty should have been totally believable, especially by a housemate. While he doubted Cooper Felix Santiago knew much about him based on the principle that nobody did, really, he figured, that by the things he'd heard muttered under other peoples' breaths whenever he walked into the Common Room, that the sixth year boy must have at least heard about his run-ins with the law of the school, so to speak.

The fifth year shifted his weight uncomfortably as the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain seemed to want to engage in small talk, answering his question by explaining that he had come to practice a move. As detached as Jared was from anything resembling a social life, as a closet Quidditch fanatic, he could entirely appreciate the Gryffindor vs. Slytherin house rivalry, and unconsciously cracked a small smile at Cooper's mention of giving Gaines - Liam Robert Gaines , that was, the rival Captain of Slytherin's house team - a surprise. "Well, good luck with that," Jared responded monotonously, attempting to dismiss conversation with the older boy.

He turned around and pretended to go back to "work," though he wasn't really sure how to do that, considering he had never actually been cleaning. He briefly fumbled with a set of pads, as if he were going to stack and re-stack them, figuring if he could at least make himself busy until Cooper went out onto the field and got on with his solo practice, that he'd be in the clear and could slip out. However, Jared was caught off guard with another set of words - not just words, a proposal. The Gryffindor boy blinked several times, making sure he'd heard Cooper properly.

"Wha-what makes you think that I can play Quidditch?" Jared asked defensively, whirling around to look at his housemate again. A fire burned inside of him - of course he wanted to practice - he loved Quidditch, but had never had the courage to show his face at tryouts. As a result, he remained on the sidelines. At least it hurt his pride less than the alternative, which probably would have been being a benchwarmer. "I - I - I don't think that I'd be of any help to you," Jared uttered nervously.

His expression, perhaps, however, suggested a different story, as his gaze shifted and he found himself looking longingly at the container of school-issed broomsticks stacked neatly along the wall.

we're still kids but we're
so in love
Cooper knew who Jared was, of course. He knew almost everyone in Gryffindor. Did he know much beyond that Jared was a Gryffindor who spent about as much time in detention as a lot of Gryffindors did? Not really. He was quiet, and not overly friendly, kept to himself and his friends. Basically the opposite of Cooper.

He grinned when Jared wished him luck, taking it at face value rather than the dismissive comment it was. “Yeah, thanks, mate,” the Gryffindor boy said. “Honestly, I think we’re all hoping to smash them this year. Especially Gaines.” Cooper continued to chat sociably.

Pulling his pads out, Cooper shed his school robes and started putting them on over his normal clothes. If he were suiting up to help another player work on something, he probably wouldn’t have bothered. Especially if they were just going to be using the Quaffle or Snitch. But since he was going to turn a bludger loose to practice with, he erred on the side of safety. The last thing his team needed before a match was for him to end up in the hospital wing with a broken neck.

Jared seemed stunned by his request to help him out on the pitch. Cooper just shrugged when the younger boy asked his question. “Maybe you can’t. Doesn’t mean you can’t try.” The beater finished tying up his pads, grinning over at him when he started nervously insisting he wouldn’t be any help. Cooper recognized that longing look he shot to the brooms. It was the one on his face every time he had to study instead of play.

“You can wear pads and hold a bat, can’t you?” he asked, picking up both his and a spare. Cooper grinned at him, approached and handed Jared the spare in a way that didn’t brook any argument. He had to either take it or drop it and the pads he held. “You’ll do fine. And look, you’re half way ready. I’ll grab some brooms and meet you out there, alright?”

The Gryffindor captain picked up his broom and one of the school brooms, slinging them both over his shoulder and heading out onto the pitch. The box of balls was already on the grass where he had left it earlier. Setting his equipment down on the grass, Cooper fussed with his gear until he heard Jared approaching behind him.

“You aren’t afraid of bludgers, right?” Cooper asked, mostly rhetorically. He was already beginning to unfasten one of them from the box. “So the play here is pretty simple. Just keep hitting this at me. And then, you know, dodge.” Gaines liked to focus on him a lot during games. Cooper wanted to get really good at turning that play back on the other beater by sending it back into his smug face.

Jared would be lying if he claimed he hadn't fantasized about this day.

Ok - so not the specifics - he didn't exactly lie around dreaming about Cooper Santiago, but ever since his second year, when he allowed his anxiety to cripple and hold him back in the locker room - while it seemed like everyone else had worked up the courage that he couldn't seem to muster to try out for the Gryffindor House Team - he had dreamed about ever having the chance again to just get out there and do it.

He didn't necessarily enjoy Cooper's adamancy, but maybe if he had had that back in his second year...things would have gone differently. He could have been an entirely different person, shaped by the sport of Quidditch.

Instead, he followed different paths - but everything came back to Quidditch. He loved watching it, loved tracking it, following different players, analyzing their statistics. He knew from the feeling he got every time he held a broom in his hands, kicked his feet off of the ground, and propelled forwards into the air that he loved playing it. Well...he supposed he loved his solo, watered-down version of it, seeing as he'd never practiced with anyone else - let alone a team - or played in front of anyone.

Normally, Jared wasn't a very "I'll show you" sort of person - but something about Cooper's suggestion -that maybe Jared was right, maybe he couldn't play - awoke something inside of him. When the older Gryffindor boy handed him a pair of pads and a bat, he wasn't sure who was making the decisions at this point - there was a particular inclination in Jared, but Cooper also wasn't really leaving much room to argue.

In a way, it was the best kind of stalemate.

Taking the pads and bat, he geared up like he was putting on his regular, every-day clothes - it was natural to him. It had been decided, then - still, Jared wasn't sure if it was his choice or Cooper's - but after a long moment of deep breathing, he followed Cooper out onto the Pitch, waiting as he geared up, taking the school broom in the meantime. He grimaced at Cooper's question of Bludgers - no, they weren't his favorite thing - but he didn't exactly want to show his hand yet (and fess up that he'd had a lot of extra practice that nobody knew about).

"I hope not," he said hesitantly, listening to Cooper's further directions on what was expected of him in this practice. Practice...with the Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team...it made him feel so...so...intimidated. And inspired, all at the same time. Bat in hand, Jared mounted the broomstick and began to ascend into the air. Cooper must've released the balls by then - as one quickly whirred past Jared, startling him and sending him momentarily sideways.

He gripped the shaft of the broom tightly, so as to not fall off already - ugh, that would be a really poor start, and this practice would probably be over before it even began. Desperate to just take advantage of this rare opportunity and to just enjoy the thing that he so loved...Jared moved towards a more open part of the field, away from Cooper, allowing him space to get up into the air himself. Once they were both there and appeared ready, Jared looked around for the closest Bludger - flew towards it - and swung his bat, aiming for the Gryffindor Captain, just as he'd asked.

((DO YOU WANNA ROLL FOR THIS? LOL))
