Tossing her book bag down on her bed, Asha was ready for a break. She grabbed an apple she had snagged at breakfast this morning that was now sitting on her dresser and headed out of her dorms. There were a few hours til her next class so she decided to go out and get some fresh air. Stepping quickly, she made her way down the tower and onto the grounds. The autumn day was cool yet comfortable and Asha was glad to be out of the castle, if only for a little while.

Asha had been working extra hard lately. She was in her sixth year now and with her NEWT testing coming at the end of the year, she wanted to excel as she always had. Plus she was working hard to become an animagus. She felt that her training was going well, but she was still new at it and felt that (so far at least) there was always room for improvement.

There were a lot of people out and about; some running around and playing in the area, others reading and just enjoying the day. She stood just outside of the entrance hall, looking for someone to talk to. She noticed Devraj Naveen Varma sitting off in the distance and began to head over. He had mentioned a recent exam he was to take and Asha had helped him study. Well, study as much as Dev would study. He could be so distracted all the time and Asha generally performed the role of keeping him focused; or at least trying to. The goofball Gryffindor could be quite difficult to reign in on any given day.

Sitting near him on the bench, she sat down and waited for him to address her. When he didn't do so fast enough, she, as always, had something to say about it. “Are you going to make me ask?” she sighed, shaking her head. She looked over at him with a glare. She crossed her arms over her chest with a huff. “Fine... Well, Devraj? How did you do on your test?”

Dev was excited to get his seventh and final year at Hogwarts up and running - and eventually, in just several months, before he knew it, it would all be over. He'd be graduating - finally - and would be headed off to the Ministry of Magic's Auror program, if all went well. He just needed to pass his classes and perform well on his N.E.W.T.S., and everything should fall into line after that.

Unfortunately, just barely a month into the school year, and Dev's plan had already derailed. Preparing for Gryffindor's first game against Slytherin, combined with one late-night party in the Room of Requirement the night before an exam, and, well...Dev didn't do so well on his Alchemy exam. He didn't often have issues in the subject, but an utter lack of attention to his coursework leading up to the test caused him to fail it. Thankfully, as the Professor knew Dev was a good student...maybe just sometimes...distracted...the Gryffindor boy was offered extra study coursework to try and make up for his grade.

As an upperclassman, Dev's schedule was pretty empty for the remainder of the day. He had multiple invites to head off a party social hour in the Study Lounge, but, in an attempt to be responsible, Dev declined, and instead, headed out to the courtyard to cram in a study session while it was still light out. If Quidditch was any indication, Dev did his best concentrating - and thinking - and performing - while he was outside. Maybe the same would be said of schoolwork done outdoors, too.

He had been outside for all of ten minutes when he became distracted by the conversations and other activities going on around him outside. Some other people studied, sure - but others engaged in loud, gossip-laden conversations; others tried to sneak away down to the shoreline of the Black Lake to do some unsavory things out of sight of any staff members. Dev's attention was zipping all around, everywhere...except for on his homework. And, apparently, also to the fact that someone had approached him.

Feeling something looming over him, Dev cautiously turned, seeing Asha. In a rather exaggerated manner, his seated position on the bench turned into him unfurling and sprawling over to his side (very nearly falling off); he fake-clutched his heart, and yelled, "Aah!" in addition to the movement, playing off like he was surprised to see her. "Ask? Ask for what? A kiss? You can have one of those anytime you want, Asha baby," he joked with a wink and a nudge of his elbow into her side.

He was obviously trying to distract her from the real question, which was undoubtedly about school work, in which he'd have to admit his failure to her. That was never fun - partially because it wounded what little pride he had - but also because she tended to always make a point of laying into him for his failures. He straightened back up, and sighed. "In a shocking turn of events, I -" he paused, for dramatic effect - "...failed it." He gave her a sideways glance, ready for the Ravenclaw to start lecturing him. It was funny how haughty she got over these things.

Not to mention, she was so cute when she was frustrated.

He was ignoring her on purpose. How... Dev of him. The Gryffindor could be more than frustrating sometimes. No, it was definitely most of the time. She waited with annoyed patience for him to decide she was worth talking to. Finally he “saw” her and Asha rolled her eyes when Dev over exaggerated his surprise at seeing her. Tch, Gryffindors... Well, she could exaggerate, too. “Oh. Yeah. Ha ha. You such a funny guy.” she said flatly. She kept her arms crossed watching the show he put on and trying to keep her neutral expression.

Devraj made some kind of crack about her asking him for a kiss. Ha! As if. He even went so far as to call her 'baby' and Asha scoffed at him. He nudged into her side with his elbow and she batted him away with her hand. “Really Dev?” she sighed. Though she often found herself to be so annoyed by him Asha actually found him rather endearing despite his rapscallion ways. In fact if he could take anything seriously especially Asha herself and maybe if he wasn't an ass most of the time he could actually have kisses from her. She really wouldn't mind it in the least, in fact, she would probably welcome it.

She turned on him, squaring her shoulders and trying to be a strong presence. There was no way he was getting out of telling her how that test went. She gave him some of her time and energy to study so he better have done well. Finally, she was about to get a straight answer, unfortunately, it wasn't the one she wanted. Her face fell and her mouth hung open slightly. “You're kidding, right?” she asked. “PLEASE tell me you're joking.”

Clearly he was NOT joking. Asha huffed and uncrossed her arms. “What is wrong with you?? I thought you wanted to become an AUROR! How do you expect to do that if you fail your tests, hmm?” She shook her head at him tiredly. “I get it, it's not like a core class but it's important. This is not going to look good on when they look at your records on these kinds of things!” She looked away from him and shook her head. She couldn't look at him right now otherwise she would just get more upset. Her friend was just not applying himself. She knew he could do it, he was SO much smarter than this. “What were you doing instead of studying, hm? Quidditch? Some dumb Gryffindor thing? A stupid girl?”

Glancing over, Asha's annoyance began to grow. “You're not even listening to me, are you??”

For years, growing up as a child, Dev had gotten away with being slightly less than a serious person. That was a direct effect of being one of six siblings, or so, that was his reasoning, anyway. As a kid, he'd learned that being goofy gained attention, and that whenever he got in trouble, there were five others to easily push the blame onto. He'd been raised a bit irresponsibly in that regard, having had his real self fly under the radar with so many other kids growing up in the house. Thus, his ways were never really...corrected.

That changed slightly when Dev started school. A lot of his nonsense nowadays could easily be chalked up to him being an "irresponsible" or "reckless" Gryffindor to most people - but to some, that excuse didn't get to the core of the issue, and didn't fly. One of those very people was Asha. Sometimes, having the Ravenclaw girl call him out annoyed him to no end. He had to admit, though, she had a tendency to push him to be more responsible, or to at least put any amount of thought into his actions - to actually do his homework, to stop stealing all of Tuk's socks, to stop taking plates of food to the edge of the Forbidden Forest due to the possibility that it might lure some unwanted creature into the school grounds - among other things.

Part of him knew that he was better for it, but the immature, boyish side of him just wanted to have fun!

And so, their conversations often wound up like these - where he pushed back, pushed her buttons, specifically. He wasn't sure if it was a test to see if she could stop being so uptight and just let her hair down and have a bit of fun, or if it was his wicked way of flirting (married couples bickered, right? See, he was only exercising his intention to someday marry her - heh), but either way, he had fun doing it. Besides, there was something intriguing about being able to annoy and charm her all in the same breath. Maybe he was reading into it too much, but if you asked him, he'd say it spoke volumes about their relationship (which, he usually liked to fantasize was closer than what they actually were).

"Serious as a heart attack," he stated with a slight shrug. His nonchalance about the issue diminished, though, as the onslaught of her lecture smacked him full force in the face. He frowned - she wasn't wrong, he did want to be an Auror, and if he kept performing dismally, he wouldn't have a shot. He looked at the ground and frowned as he listened, though judging by her closing question, he must've given off the vibe that he was doing the opposite. "No! I'm listening -" he started, trying to piece together what to say.

He could admit that she was right about it all, everything. Dev wasn't exactly one to tuck his tail between his legs, though, even when he was totally in the wrong. It wasn't that he was going to fight back with Asha - he couldn't, when she spoke nothing but the truth - but what he could do, and what he was fantastic at - was derailing. "Hey! No, no stupid girls. You know you're the only girl for me," he teased playfully, bumping her shoulder with his. He straightened a bit, and seemed to soften. "I did blow off a study group for an extra Quidditch practice one night...that may have been it -" he paused, clearly dancing around directly telling the brunette Ravenclaw that she was right.

But dammit if he didn't know it, and dammit if he didn't love her for pointing it out to him, keeping his ass in check. He wasn't sure what he would do without Asha.
